well hi all i have started hauling stuff out to the thrift stores . a lot of the old camping gear is going to the boy scouts in the poorer neighborhoods i would rather let young people have the gear so it can be used . now i need to find a home for my canoe . i cant believe how much crap that i have collected in 7 years i have cleaned out 2 bedrooms and my closet i am giving my old clothes to the homeless and those who need the stuff . this part of change in life is really tough .

:)  I think you have the right idea. When I saw the heading of this thread I thought you were hittin' the road.  :)

I can no longer stand on a concrete floor several hours at a time while lifting and sorting thru my storage units.  Now Queenie and I go and rummage around and sort stuff until I have the floor area in my van between the front seats and back seat full.....or I just can't stand up straight any longer.  I take stuff and give it to the ladies at 2 truck stops, neighbors and friends, donate books & movies to the library.  Sometimes in nice weather I'll sit stuff out on the curb.

I recently had a close younger family member tell me that "you got yourself in this situation and I'm not helping you, so get yourself out".  Yeah well I'm passing on the family curse
" I only hope someday you have one just like you ".  Karma will get'em in the long run.   :D

my family thinks i have lost my mind doing this

I found that by taking a photograph of things I really enjoy, that the photo evokes the same good memories as having the item itself...

also, remembering when I was very poor and shopping at thrift stores, how excited I was to get a real "find"... so giving my things to the Miami Rescue Mission means someone else who really needs them will get that joy too! Pass it on.

I'm trying to find a local Scout Museum to give my Boy and Girl Scouting items to... over 40 years in each organization and I have things that most don't know ever existed (except older scouters like me)... I just can't let go of the basic BSA uniform since they only make polyester slacks now... and I have the twill ones that sell for oodles on ebay IF you can find them... and I have a ladies skirt that NO ONE (women) ever wore and none realize it ever existed... makes me feel more like that lady in the midst of all the men in a big meeting. :D

I have family china and crystal... and still working on that!

If I need it in the future, God will provide it again, right? :)

My philosophy :)
For every "treasure" I'm unloading, I remember that somewhere, someone else is doing the same.  Everything can be replaced if needed.

Good for you for getting it done, Buster!  I'm looking at boxes and piles and losing steam.  I was planning an estate sale, but now I'm leaning toward a "Friends & Family Open House" - take what you want, make a donation if you like.  Anything left will go to Goodwill.

"my family thinks i have lost my mind doing this"

So who cares what they think??? They've done a lot of stuff in their lives and never asked you for your opinion, right?

You have to do what YOU have to do, and what you WANT to do. What they think is really nothing but a fart in the wind. It matters more what your dog thinks.

I've lived in W. WA for 23 years, and have never even HEARD anyone mention the Scouts. Too busy making meth, I guess.

Train you must have missed the Scouts being in the news the last few years, especially around Seattle. There are very active troops out in southern Snohomish county as well.

Good for you Buster! Keep plugging away at it and eventually it will be done.

The only Scouts in the news down here were I live (a couple of hours south of Seattle) are the ones with the sexual predators. Oh, and I think the two moronic Scout leaders who toppled the balanced rock formation in Goblin Valley, UT, that had been sitting there for 150 million years. {The BSA booted them.) Otherwise, I don't think I've ever heard of a Scout troop doing anything around here. If they are here, they're very quiet.

Yeah there are morons in every organization, and it's no wonder that media that create news are only interested in finding bad things about everything report only the morons (maybe they identify with them easier?)

Many of our astronauts, presidents and other good leaders are Eagle Scouts... and there are thousands of good deeds done each week by the youth in the BSA. ;) Yes, they generally are quietly assisting.

You could always sell the house furnished? That way you could kill two birds at the same time.

Like Headache said , keep at it and before you know it . It will all be gone....
Thanks for remembering those in need .

well going to take a couple of days off and going to start again during the weekend 4 van loads and more stuff

:) You are really making progress!  I'm envious too.  I noticed some nice looking wooden pieces that could possibly be repurposed in van/bus/trailer conversions.  It's just a idea however if you posted some freebies here and on Craigs List you  wouldn't have to go the work of loading and hauling away stuff and things would go directly to people that need/want them.  I bring stuff from my storage & apt. and offer it to neighbors or when the weather's nice just put it on the curb with a FREE sign.  The town I live in is pretty lenient about what can be set curb side.  Just an idea

Provided the weather co-operates Queenie and I will spend several hours at the storage units tomorrow.  She had a seizure early this evening, woke me by standing on my shoulder to let me know as it started. If the weather is good she will be laying in the sun on a pillow or in the van....she really likes the van.

next will be cleaning out bedroom 2 all ready cleaned out bedroom 3

I agree with Txjaybird, I put some stuff on Craigslist for free. It was gone almost immediately. A lot of people are in need out there, and a useful freebie is always appreciated. It will also save on your back with all that lifting.

We did the same thing just six weeks ago, and yes, it's exhausting! We ended up having to load a lot of "stuff" in the RV because we had to be OUT, then sorting it out after we got it parked. We still have too much "stuff", but at least the frenzy of the move out itself is over and we can breathe again. I don't miss one thing I got rid of, either.

Keep on keepin', you'll get it done!  :D
