....wild rumor-mongering happening these days.
NOT wild rumor mongering. I was there today. I did the math.  The price charged for Great Value paper towels was 4 times higher.

Fortunately we have all learned to shop online after being stuck in our homes. I have two basics left that I buy at Wmart, prescriptions and paper towels. Going, going, gone.  -crofter

I am not a real fan of Walmart I see them as almost a necessary evil. But the price gouging might start with the timber tract owners and the the lumber harvesters and then the paper manufactures and then the trucking companies and then the logistics \ warehousing and on and on - the point I am making is that almost everyone wants more $ when they can get it and some might deserve it for a good reason like running more shifts etc. But yes there is to much profiteering going on at times like this. I have a friend who owned a small town hardware store. If he did not raise the prices on his inventory as the price of replacing that inventory went up he was out of business. I said this not to justify anyone who gouges or to disagree with anyone here. It is just interesting to me how complicated these things can be.

"Were they 4 times more expensive?"

I am not sure as I usually buy TP and paper towels at the dollar store and in much smaller packaging. If I get bored enoug, I will find the receipt and do some math.

Oh, I have no doubt that the price you paid is the price you paid.

The rumor-mongering I was referring to is ascribing evil motives to the changes we are experiencing upon the basis of no evidence. There's no reason I can see to assume that W*Mart's expenses have remained the same. Price-gouging on W*Mart's part is only one reason out of many that could account for the price you are paying for paper towels.

This isn't TP, but one thing that turned me off of walmart.
Two decades or so ago, needed new pots & pans.
Kmart had a set (so many pieces) , Walmart set (same brand same color) You had to spend almost $30 more to make it identical to the Kmart set.
Shop around, price weight volume you'll see why wm can charge a little less. Also I bought an elec. health care appliance on line from wm, had to send back , warranty repair manufacturer sent it back with a form letter saying it was counterfeit, First & last time online wm shopping for me
Sorry I got no spare butt tape

The grocery stores in Seattle have limits on how many units of paper products any one person can buy. So no problems getting TP or paper towels. They have now also limited the number of customers who can be in the store at one time and have made aisle one way. A lot of towns and cities are doing that.

I just saw some quotes in a news story on paper products that say the stores are raising prices on TP, paper towels, facial tissue, etc to reduce hoarding. Yeah...right as if anyone is going to believe that story when all they have to do to reduce hoarding is limit the amount customers can buy. A hoarder is not likely to stand waiting in line multiple times at Costco, Walmart or Kroger. That would take too long and few people would have the patience to spend the hours of their day doing that.
