Exploding porta potty???

I purchased a&nbsp;<span style="line-height: 20px;">Thetford porta potty curve and when I pull the flush handle it blows air upward and 2 times I have had to jump in shower it was so bad??? I dont see a vent and drilling a tiny hole maybe an option?</span>

Manual says "Before Use&nbsp;&nbsp; Vent any build-up heat or altitude pressure and prevent splashing; close cover and open and close holding tank valve." <br><br>http://www.thetford.com/HOME/PARTS/PortableToilets/PortaPottiCurve/tabid/894/Default.aspx<br><br>Don't know about this one. I have always had vented and when they were not it did what you was experiencing. <br><br>the marine empty spout has a vent on it. Much harder to empty. Looks like a 1/32 hole on top front might be the answer?&nbsp;

I had one on my boat and put the vent in. It did smell. So I suggest that you find a vent filter and make the opening the right size and plumb it up. Mount vent as far up as you can to prevent sloshing up to it.<br><br>It would be best to vent outside. Most marine stores have these.<br><br>Most of the potty's have the small holes in them.<br><br>James AKA Lynx

I learned the hard way and thank god I had a running shower to wash in as it was like a blow gun of crap all over me and the van!!! I am going to try different chemicals to see if that will make a difference?

chemicals will not help with that problem.&nbsp; in fact you really should pay attention as to what chemicals you use anyway.&nbsp; depending on where you dump you could harm somebodies septic system.&nbsp; highdesertranger

&nbsp;I don't use toilet chemicals and the smell, which dissipates rapidly enuf, is no worse than from grunting out a log. Wouldn't drill a hole in the top.. you'll find out why when driving a rough FS road with a full crapper (hope ya got a mop handy). Ask me how I know this or, hmmm... let's not go there.&nbsp; ..Willy.

&nbsp;Let's just say that I'm no stranger to tragedy. Canadian Tire sells this toilet which has a hand pump to pressurize the flush-water reservoir. The bottom section has 3 valves (and the knife valve), none of which sealed correctly. The lousy thing almost literally blew chunks when near full and hitting the backroads. ..Willy.

vent it slightly before sitting down....also do it if its hot out...maybe 3-4 times a day...and especially after driving<br><br><br>i use a thetford 465<br><br>a fantastic fan is a beautiful thing

In our trip to Mexico back in the mid seventies, we towed our "Lovebug", a Fiberglas egg trailer. We had a porta potty, it slipped under the front bunk bed. Well in the middle of Mexico, headed north toward Mexico city, I had to go pretty bad. Pulled over to the side of the road, went to the trailer and started to pull out the PP. We had risen two or three thousand feet in elevation from sea level going to Mexico City's 7500' elevation. You can guess what happened. The lower air pressure caused the PP to expand enough I couldn't pull the PP out from under the bunk bed. I could get to the flush pedal though, so I slowly let the pressure off in the PP. I'm glad I had to 'go', if we had gone all the way to Mexico City without releasing the pressure it may have truly exploded. That would have been fun to clean up . I think I would have just set fire to it.
