Hi. Thanks for letting me in.

I'm Jez and I'm based in the UK, mostly moving between South Wales and Scotland.

I full-time (for about a year so far) in an old Hymer Mercedes. She's slow, but pretty, and gets there.

Just stumbled on this forum looking for ideas about solar.

Look forward to talking to you all, on and off.

Happy trails.

PS. Please excuse me if I'm sometimes a little slow to respond. I'm sometimes out of signal, and tend to keep odd hours... Thanks.

Welcome to the Van Living Forum :) I wouldn't worry about being slow as it will allow you to enjoy your life on the road while putting in for a day or two (or more) in a camp spot before carrying on. Some times the slow travel is the best.

Thanks, eDJ.
I couldn't agree more. I wouldn't want to commute in the old girl, but I don't have to, and she's fast for a house.

I'm no expert, but northern latitudes don't work well for solar. From what I have heard, the UK has 4 seasons - winter, autumn and spring, with the week in-between being summer!

A lot of the folks on this forum tend to spend most of their time in the south. Just so you know.

Since school days I've admired the way those of the UK used their RV's.
I remember my father reading in some of his RV magazines about Camping life in Europe. He got such a kick with one article about the UK where people like yourself engaged in what was called "Camping A, B, or C".

A, was going to a camping spot that was like a second home ground. They would stay there for most of the season before returning home.

B, was going out and staying in one spot for a few weeks before moving on to a more distant campground and then repeating this for a total of three times.

C, was simply drifting about to sight see much like a vagabond. In the states we speak of this as the 2-2-2 system. It seemed the younger set enjoyed this more using Volkswagen Camper Vans than Caravans.

Are you familiar with any of this ?

Hi and welcome! I am interested in hearing how Van life is different and yet the same between our countries!

I thought the 2-2-2 system was 1. stop driving by 2:00 PM and 2. don't stay in the same place more than two days and 3. I can't remember, lol. Umm... only drive two hours a day?

You are right Carla. 2-2-2 is a way of free ranging or traveling with a plan.

Putting in by 2 pm avoids "drive time traffic" (3:30 to 6 pm) assures finding a more desirable camping space with amenities such as power hookup's etc. Once in one can relax and partake of the sites and events at the Campground/State Park etc. The next day there can provide for planning the next leg of the trip and more relaxation.

The third "2" is to break camp by 9 am (after morning drive time 6 to 9 am is over) Then one can go about the itinerary that they set up going from place to place with a minimum of driving in length of time on the road. (this can vary as it would probably be more is out west)

Then put in to the next Camping spot by 2 pm if possible....and repeat.

Again this may vary by the part of the country you are in and how developed it is.
