Over in the emergency vehicle/car audio world they often install a second alternator to keep the battery arrays charged. There are kits for it.

It seems like it would be good to have multiple options for charging the house batteries -- solar, shore power, portable generator, a second alternator -- depending on what's available at a particular time.

So has anyone done a second alternator? If so, are you happy with the results?

check out DC power engineering, they make great stuff, they have dual alternator kits for some newer domestic trucks/vans. and make high output alternators up to 375 amp. mechman also makes good high output alternators some are even higher amperage
i'm a fan of running one high output over 2 stock alternators because it's one less item to worry about, less rotating mass so maybe slightly better fuel economy. i'm willing to bet a quality aftermarket alternator is also more efficient.
either way you will want to upgrade your grounds to 0 gauge. no point in having huge output and choking it with 2 or 4 gauge.

if i remember right the ford PSD ambulances total about 350amps betweeen the 2. which is more then most need, not to shabby considering my van came with less then a quarter of that...
