There is one near us. As a child, there were about seven a round. And we went every weekend.

The one left has a hard time making money - mostly from concession sales. He forbids outside food being brought in because it kills his profit margin.

I read an article about the decline of the 35mm film industry. Soon, theaters are going to have to change their technology over to something new. Those who don't wont be able to show new movies.

Sounds like the end of the drive-in theater, and possibly many indoor theaters as well who can't afford the changeover.

It will be interesting to see what can be used for projecting the images... These new high intensity LEDs can be seen a mile away... hmmmm....

It's a shame but the profit margin is so extremely thin. Many times, theatres make nothing on the admission price - only on the concessions. I will definitely buy a mega sized Diet Coke and perhaps some candy... Gotta avoid the greasy popcorn but I do want to contribute to them making some money on the deal. Drive-ins are such a treasure. It will be fun to relive some old memories.

V.T.

There are a couple left in South Dakota. a couple left in MN that I know of too. I've not been for a long time. I want to take my younger kids that haven't seen a movie in this format. I'd also like to take them to a Baseball game under the lights in Sioux City some time
If you would; PM me your location in IA. I'm currently working in IA.

gus

I grew up back in the 50's and remember them well. On a Friday night I would drive my Cousins '41 Ford coupe stuffed with kids in the trunk into the movies. When the movie started and it got dark, I would open the trunk and let them out. No one ever ratted on us, it was done all the time by everyone. It was part of the fun of going to the movies. I miss those days very much. It was a time of goodness compared to today. I have often thought that if I could go back in time I would probably go back to 1962. Before this country started going down hill.

When I was working on the island they showed movies once a week out doors on a huge outdoor screen. There were benches for sitting on. There were no cars on the island so this was as close to a drive inn as you could get here. I rarely missed a movie in this format; it was fun stuff.
Ride your bike to the movie; set on a bench and watch it.

gus

There were 4 within 30 miles of where I grew up in upstate Ny in the 80's. Now I think there are 2 left. Here in Alabama, there is one not far away that still has $5/carload night. I havnt been there yet, but it's a cheap night out for our kids wither friends.

Took my girls to a drive-in double feature in Honor Michigan. It was "George of the Jungle" and me and the dogs snoozed in the back of the van during the 2nd movie so I don't remember it. That was in 1998...a few years ago.

Rae

We still have a drive in here in BFT, SC. I used to take my children all the time, haven't been since they grew up, Id'e probably fall asleep before the second movie even started, now. Can't beat the buttered movie popcorn!

I cant think of one drive-in still operating in WA but sure there are a few... But in Seattle along the sound there is a park which in the summer they show good old classics as you sit in the grass... This is open and free to all during the summer... They are held every Saturday night via a big projection screen... BYOB and food, get there early though...
A drive-in here in pa has Sunday flea markets that probably bring in more than the movies. They were completely wiped out in the floods last fall so it must be lucrative enough cause they rebuilt the concession stand and have reopened for markets and will open the screens next week.
