Sometimes I have problems with my feet. I've not a clue if it would help you are not but, it is cheep and if it work worth the trouble to do it. I use a ball, tennis, and roll it under my feet until all the pain is gone rolling it. It makes the pain in my feet leave and they don't hurt walking. I don't know if it would help the tendon you are having issues with. BTW, it was my chiropractor that recommended it to me.
 
You should be proud of yourself! You made it pretty far along the trail and honestly, it was probably the best part of it. The sandhills are amazing but they go for a long stretch and with no shade it would be brutal for hiking. Spring or fall might be a better time to do the trail.
The people in rural Nebraska are great so I'm not surprised that you got a ride. :)
I agree with Morgana - take sometime off and let everything heal.
