Can't Insulate my whole car yet, can I create a simple, cheap insulated compartment?

What materials?

This is so I can keep electronics for cool when I have to leave them in the car and can't always park in shade...

EDIT: Must be able to be in the car for at least 6 hours in extreme heat

If a cooler won't do it, then nothing probably will.

None of the temps in your car should have bad effects on your electronics. I would think it would need to get warm enough to melt solder, and I don't think that's going to happen.

I have seen it get hot enough this month in Missouri to melt plastic.  A cooler or under a stack of clothing might be your only chance.  Just not in the direct sun.  Windows cracked as much as you dare.

I keep my laptop in a backpack on the floor in the front of the van (no insulation up there) and its never gotten hot. I do use a sun shade on front windows. Low to floor and not in direct sun and it should be fine.

Agree that a cooler is your best bet.  I keep my digital cameras in a cooler on my back seat.  Has the added advantage that anyone looking in through the car window just sees an old cooler, not something that screams "Valuable!  Steal Me!"

I had good success in keeping items cool by putting them in a soft-sided insulated bag and keeping them at floor level on the north side of my car. A cooler would work even better than an insulated bag. Warm air rises, making the air at the floor of your vehicle less hot. By keeping it on the north side, the sun won't be beating down on the vehicle's body just outside where your cooler is stored. I also covered it up with blankets, making sure no direct sunlight would hit it. If, at the end of the day, the night time temps get colder than the inside of your cooler, be sure to open it up overnight to let the colder air in, then close it up before the day starts heating up.
