There are horizontal tanks designed for use on forklifts. There are also heavy steel mounting brackets for them.

True, but forklift propane tanks feed liquid propane to the forklift engine. Some of these tanks DO have a vapor port, but the cost of these exceed what most of us will pay for a small (or large) propane tank for RV use.

Normal heating and cooking appliances use propane vapor, not propane liquid.

Valve and fitting changes could be made to an older used tank (I assume) but the cost and refill legality makes this impractical for most of us in normal RV applications.

Yes, there are horizontal tanks for vapour and / or liquid feed, but they are for specialist uses, and it will be tough to find certified techs to do the required mods to act as replacements for standard BBQ / 100# bottles.

And all but those last two are very expensive.

And then the issue of getting them refilled, lots of places won't touch anything looks non-standard.

Autogas style suspended from your truck chassis would be best, safest, easiest to adapt,

and in fact there are hand pumps available to transfer from a big say 80-gal truck tank, to fill up your 20# ones out at your living site.

But lots of difficulty and expense involved even after you know what you're doing.

And it really can be dangerous, all these regs are there for a reason.
