I'm planning a 4/5 month Boondocking trip to the States, this November, and I'm now trying to research suitable campervans of ANY style.

Just me traveling, and want something smaller, with a shower /toilet and ideally 4WD, but not a 'must'. Looks/setup don't matter, just practical and mechanically sound.

I've got to be able to sell it easily before my return... so don't want to spend a lot of $'s on it.... guessing up to around $10,000 and don't mind losing a few thousand for a quick sale.

It's pretty hard to research from this end, as I don't know the suitable van names, or even the best sites to use.

I'd fly into L.A., but I can start my trip from any practical place.

All advice would be greatly appreciated!

Around theses parts you can get an awsome set-up for a lot less. Start checking craigs-list near where you are flying in at. Use your rental car and expand out. Sounds like you are thinking of a van so that may be a class B. Most I see are a bit pricy , the -C's are everywhere it seems.
Our LA people will clue you in. I would think LA will be expensive though.
Dragonfly
Thanks, Dragonfly... this is going to be one fun project... I didn't understand how little I knew about buying in your RV market!

I found Craigs-list and realised I don't even know van model names to search on.... that's before I even get to pricing and suitable location areas.

If researching and preparing for my trip is supposed to be half the fun... I must be having a hell of a great day... today.
Lots of people will have advice for you here. I know I will have some dissagreements but, never go wth a Dodge before 2002 or 3, tranny problems. My opinion. Another thing you can do, when you find the year and model, do a search on problems with it and see if you can live with them. Every vehicle will have specific issues.
Dragonfly
Mid 1990 model class Bs like ours are readily available at reasonable prices, and there's generally a good market for selling them people always ask if we're willing to sell ours. Pictures of the type on my old blog below:

The best thing to do is go to a RV rental place... There are many in the LA area... Since you will be coming in our winter you will have off season rates and a great selection to choose from...

Google search RV rental LA, but look here first, this is a big reputable dealer/renter called cruise America: www.cruiseamerica.com/rent/

keep us up to date, and maybe we will see you at the RTR 2013 in Quartzsite Arizona

Also to add to the above, while you may take my advise you will have to look into the laws of out of country drivers license, insurance, and know the laws considering driving in America... They say that ignorence of the laws is not a defense in this country... I am sure the rental company can help you with these

Remember the steering wheel is on the left side and the operating pedals will be oppisite add that your on the wrong side of the road to what you maybe use to and this can be very daunting in places like LA...

Suggested items include American GPS roads, maps, atlas and a cell phone for emergencies...

Plan ahead like your doing and you will have a great time...

PM or E-Mail me if you have questions...

Thanks, Everyone for your advice!

Dragonfly
I've followed up and read about B & C class… I understand now and think I'm more looking for a C class. I appreciate your assistance.
stude53
Thanks for that link… you certainly get a better a 'Bang for your Buck' in the States!
Seraphim
Liked your Van at Flight of the GyrFalcon …. that in a 4X4 configuration, would be exactly what I was looking for, but I realise the 4X4 option may not be available.

Our floor pedal layout, from the left is, Clutch, Brake, Acc. - think you're is similar from memory?

My International Drivers Licence, Insurance, etc. is fine from past experience.

If anyone is interested the below Youtube is around my Winter home. King Ash Bay is a very remote site, located on the McArthur River, Northern Territory, Aust… and about as 'Gone Bush' as you can get. It's a 'Not For Profit' community owned by my fishing club... for all fishers and remote travelers!

The following Youtube goes for 20 minutes and was only intended to record my Sister/Brother In Law's holiday…. they visited last year!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DpWM8Pej1w

Thanks, again!
Liked your Van at Flight of the GyrFalcon …. that in a 4X4 configuration, would be exactly what I was looking for, but I realise the 4X4 option may not be available.

4x4 in that configuration is rare, I think. Perhaps a truck camper might be more doable for you, then, in a 4x4. That's the way DW and I are going now.

Hi,

I'm from oz currently doing a boondocking trip, I've been planning a big write up for a while. I read on thorntree(lonely planet) it's impossible, that's ********, listen to the guys on here they're living it and know there stuff.

I tried to buy in Phoenix but it was spring training and transit workers on strike so it was $150/day to rent a car tto find my machine. Plan to get a rent car for a week in order to buy. It was cheaper to fly to Vancouver and bought a 95 dodge caravan for $900 here. Make sure you say rent - hire means u get a driver and you'll get funny looks when you ask.

Cars in the states are much BIGGER, flasher and newer then home, if you try to buy from a dealer they'll include the word 'finance' at least once in every sentence. Buy from Craigslist.

Insurance is insane over here think $100/month in the states and $170 in Canada. If you have comprehensive insurance ask them for a letter of no claims, it'll get you a discount. Don't skimp on insurance everyone has a horror story. Everything else (except healthcare) is dirt cheap compared to home. Your food bill will be half what your used to..

Economy here is down low compared to home. Hotels are same as home, but longer term accomadation is dirt cheap, guy i stayed with lived 1km from downtown Phoenix in 3 bed house for $600/month!! Rented spare rooms for $150/month.

Yanks have these things called 'conversion vans' they're everywhere. I thinks they'd be sweet if you can afford the gas. They're everywhere so will fit in wherever you park it and some come with everything you'd need. The gas would have sunk my ship though a guy told me 13MPG, I get 20MPG from my minivan. Transmission problems are endemic in all vans here, know what to look for before you buy. It'll be. 1-2k fix if she blows and there's plenty of lemons on the market. That's why I bought bottom of the market, if it runs i'll sell it for $500 in minutes. If it doesn't I can drop a match in it and buy another one. Besides if it lasted more the 15 days it was cheaper the a 60/day hire car!

I'm in a minivan with some bed sheets we cut up velcro'd to the windows and no one has hassled us in the month we've been street camping. We just built a bed(in home depot carpark, they cut the timber to size then i hired a drill to put it together) and slapped her in.

Power & net - library's are better then home here, everything you need for free

Showers - local pool has $1 swim night including hot spa, sauna and shower!

Campsites - as listed on here( national parks here are expensive)

Only problem so far has been getting free ice, sometimes cheaper to drop a bottle of water in the freezer at Walmart before bed. Get up in the morning and buy it.

Craigslist is your friend, checkout the free section! I got everything I needed for camping out for next to nothing - don't buy new unless you have too.

Sim cards are a pain in the arse here - you'll need to go directly to the company to buy it. Ie must goto Tmobile store to get one, everyone else will think your a *****. I tried to get a 'Walmart special plan' = 3 days of frustration on hopeless public transport.

Car pedals are the same as home, driving on the wrong side is weird at first but not to hard. Shouldn't need a intl drivers licenece, but i'd bring it anyway.

Mcarthur river? I'm from the territory aswell, spent last year in Alice. Remember it'll be cold( read freezing) in a lot of the famous places come november. Check out a jacked up Toyota delica, might suit your needs if you converted it and can afford to buy it. They have something that's like a caravan that sits on the tray of a ute(pickup). They're really popular and affordable, might suit your needs. But I can't remember what they call them.

Sorry about grammer etc on a iPhone, good luck!!
