Spending can become habitual but on the other hand, so can frugality. I prefer the latter so I created a game I call “Beating the Man.” Buy only what you “need” and/or what you really, really want and can also afford (ie minimize all debt). When you do buy, always buy quality at a discount to msrp. One of the rules is “Cheap pays twice.” 

Hopefully my children will enjoy “Beating the Man” as much as I do!
