Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in October

Would like to go to this huge ballooning festival but keep hearing how unsafe the city is. Would like to camp but it seems all state parks in area are booked (or site is malfunctioning). Anyone know of areas within 50 miles or so to camp/boondock that is safe for a woman alone?

I spent an entire month in ABQ, and stayed in the Walmart lot the entire time. Had no problems. I'm in a van, though there were also RVs there all the time too.

BTW, Albuquerque has a lot of really cool museums if you are into science and/or history, including the International Balloon Museum. And a nice zoo and aquarium.
