While travelling the tow vehicle will be the charging of the house batteries, and
so will solar panels when funds become available.

I have a couple of battery back up/uninterrupted power supply units.
Does anyone have experience in repairs or trouble shooting these types
of systems or understand them?

In both of them, the non backup strips work, but the battery backup ones
do not. The apc unit has a light that is on that is the building wiring
fault alert. and the other one looks to have a similar trouble light
that is lit up. The apc unit also clicks and starts whining when i turn
on the power to the battery backup portion.

Afraid I can't help with the UPS Systems, My only experience with them was to remove the battery, order another  and replace it for my Sister's computer.  I did not try and revive the battery as I had none of my tools with me.

About the Tow vehicle charging trailer batteries, this is pretty ineffective if the 7 pin connector is used.

Now, in the spirit of overkill, opposite end of the spectrum compared to a 7 pin connector passing 10 amps maximum:

With this 500 amp winch connector, and an  ~ 30 foot 2 gauge total circuit path between 'trailer' battery and 160 amps alternator, Over 100 amps were delivered into a new Lifeline GPL-31XT battery depleted to 50%.  The alternator quickly rose to 220F and from that point maximum amps were 86.

If you cycle your trailer batteries deeply, and want the drive from spot to spot to return the batteries to as close to 100% charged as possible,  Think about thick copper and a burley connector to let those amps flow. Disconnect connector when parked and camping.

Automatic options are possible too of course.

90% of the time the APC units have a battery that needs replacement. Evaluate the cost of battery versus cost of new unit. Some times a couple bucks higher and you get a new unit.
There isn't much of anything inside these units that a end user can repair.
