Hello,

I have been exploring ideas as to Fridge/Freezer options, and am leaning towards Engel or a dometic. I am old fashioned, like to physically see the item, get a good feel for it etc, and returns are lot easier and less stressful for me.

I have seen many online of course. But am curious if anyone has seen them in a brick and mortar?

While I am at it, has anyone tried this as an option? A superconductor blah blah, wondering if it is temp regulated, IE: 90 degrees out side cools to 60 degrees. etc, also was contemplating a typical dorm stle 1.7 fridge, but have read bad things happen to these. That is about it, really just curious about somewhere to go in person to see these in real life.

Thanks

I have seen a couple at Camping World. I got my 2 Engels from expedition type stores but I ordered them over the internet so I don't know if they had them at the brick and mortar store. Expedition Exchange in Los Angles used to have them in stock at their store. best to just check around. if you go to RTR you could see hundreds of different ones. highdesertranger

This might help.

A refridgerator controles temperture to a defined point.

A cooler lowers te temperature, but only a set amount  depending on the surrounding air.  If it is 110 outside, the cooler will maby go down to 60.  With the fridge 33 no matter the outside temp.

I hope to make it to the RTR one day, currently in New England, RI, but it is looking like soon will be in TX soon enough, need one before then, might be able to get by with cooler, but really want ice, love ice, nice ice. I will look for the camper world, have tried REI etc, just not seeing them in the stores here.

when the Engels first went on sale I called all of the retailers around me to see if I couldn't just pick one up instead of having it shipped. Either they were out of stock, no longer handled them or were not wiling to match the sale price. I went through the effort of getting it shipped and don't regret it.

Dorm units work, They are not designed to be mobile.  I have seen some that lasted, but others that died quickly.  If you have enough power, a pawn shop unit for $50 might just last long enough to find exactly what you want.

Homedepot.com shows Whynter fridge units so at the very least you could order one and see it up close when it comes in to your closest store.

When I first read this post, I was thinking you were asking if anyone used one in a sticks and bricks, guess my mind didn't register the mortar part of the headline.

I ordered an Engel and have been using it at home instead of my house fridge to see how the size works for me and so far i've been extremely impressed with it's overall quality/feel and it's suiting my refrigeration needs just fine. Don't see myself having any problems transitioning over to road life with it. I could def see myself grabbing another and using one as a freezer and one as a fridge.

I too normally like to see things first and then make a decision. However, it this case everything worked out great. Camping World may stock them, their website shows most as online only but two don't have that, so maybe a few are in stock at local stores? You could also try some of the larger Truck Stops.

Engel (IMO the best) is going direct only I believe.

If buying from a reseller, call home office to check warranty coverage before paying.

At least one Vendor at the Big Tent at the 2017 RTR had a Dometic. Discount Solar in Quartzsite carries a brand I don't know, but it is pretty expensive.
