Job listings just went up for this year's world series of poker - I did it last year and am going back again this year. It runs May 27-July 14 which sucks because it's Las Vegas at the hottest time of the year, but it's easy to find a temporary apartment or an RV park with hookups since all the snowbirds are gone. Once you have this on your resume there are opportunities at other casinos around the country for temp work during big events.

For any of these jobs you'll need to be able to pass a basic background check and be able to get a gaming license, so no felony convictions or gaming violations. There is no interview and I don't believe they require or check references - they just put you through a quick group audition which most people pass.

The cashier jobs just require basic math skills and that you be comfortable handling money and chips. You can buy chips at any casino to practice with and there are youtube videos showing how to properly count them down. When you're done you can cash in the chips and get your money back.

For poker dealing you really do need experience or a class but there may be a way to apply now saying you've taken a class, see if you get invited to audition, then take the class before the audition. Or, just do this year as a cashier and see if it's something you might like to pursue.

I don't know how long the listings stay up so if you think you MIGHT want to do it, probably best to apply now and if you change your mind just drop out and say you aren't available after all. They need to hire 1000+ people so they don't have time to take anything personally.

It's a lot of work but can be great fun and the money is good.

Sounds like a fun gig for the right person.
Main Street RV park was cheap and clean. Easy bus ride down to the Rio, and the 99 cent margaritas at Main St casino are pretty darn good. Couple blocks from Freemont St Experience.

I made it through another year! I made the same money I did last year - $11k for 7 weeks work. I'm about to do another 10 day gig in Reno based off the experience I got there and plan to do more of these.

There were people of all ages working there - 21 through 70+, including some retirees who were dealing for the first time. It's a good gig if you like traveling and being able to pick when and where you want to work.

Also... free food in the break room!

If you think you might be into it I'd suggest looking into dealer schools in your area now so you'll be ready once applications go up for next year.

11k in less than two months? That's some pretty good deals, man. Good job!

Yeah - it's not a great career if you want stability but if you want to move around and work in bursts it's great.

Select Nevada for the state, WSOP for the property.

Cashiers/chip runners do not need any special training or experience. You need a relatively clean criminal record, a neat appearance (no foot-long beards, sorry!) and the ability to sort and count a big pile of casino chips of various denominations. There is an audition process but from what I hear it's not that difficult.

To be a dealer you pretty much need to take a class. They tend to take 5 weeks and cost around $500, but there are cheaper options. Send me a private message if you would like more info about that.

Once you finish off the 7 week series you can keep going back every year without having to audition. If you finish it off as a dealer, there are temporary dealing jobs year round all over the country. Last year I started traveling around doing 10 day and 3 week tournaments. I'm already getting more job offers than I can accept. I get to pick when and how much I want to work. Most jobs are around 50 hours per week and pay in the $30/hr range with free meals on the days I work. WSOP pays closer to $35. Nearly all poker rooms are non-smoking.

It's probably too late to get in as a dealer unless you've already started dealer school but the clerk, cashier, valet, cleaner, cook, and other jobs would be open to many people here.

They also hire a lot of photographers who go around and take pictures of every player in every major tournament. I don't know how hiring works for that but it might be worth checking into if you're into photography:

Thanks for keeping this thread updated.  I want to look into this when on the road.

Hi Reducto,

I know they have poker training schools, but are there schools to train to be a cage cashier?

Not that I know of - there are youtube videos showing how to properly stack and count casino chips and you could just buy some chips to practice at home and cash them in when you're done. The rest of the skills would vary from casino to casino anyway so I would think they will train you. The job listing does not have any specific skills other than being detail oriented and able to handle large amounts of money accurately. Some previous money handling experience is probably good.
