Hi everyone! I'm really excited I found this community, I was wondering where the social aspect of vanlife could be found.  I'm Justin, and I'm working on The Public House Project.  I'm looking to turn some houses in to shared vandweller spaces, with room to park, wifi, gardens, washer/dryer, etc.  The house and land is open to all as a shared space.  There are parking nooks for people to park and stay in.  I am working on one outside of Boise, ID and near Mt Shasta, CA.  If you'd like to learn more, get involved or start your own, we've got a facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/203290671359957
There are also illustrations of the concept on there.
Are you in interested in joining this project?  What are your thoughts, concerns, or how would you like to see it develop?

Thanks, Justin

Welcome to the CRVL forums Justin! The main problem that forum members have found when considering something like this is that city and county codes do not allow living in vehicles. Often RVs or trailers can not even be stored on the property so check into the code very carefully before purchasing property.

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips, Tricks and Rules" post lists some helpful information to get you started.

Most of our rules boil down to two simple over-riding principles: 1) What you post should provide good information (like your introductory post), and 2) Any response to someone else's post should make them feel glad they are part of this forum community.

We look forward to hearing more from you.

My experience with co-housing was that I paid for everything. And also did repairs and maintenance.

How is your setup different?

I've looked into a several co-housing communities over the years. It did not seem a noticeably cheaper way to live to me. And, as an introvert, I really did not want to add so many more people into my inner/middle circle at once. My experiences with communal living - and I've been part of several intetional living communities - is that in the end, I really don't like having to negotiate the necessary group decisions.

What would attract me? A Caballo Loco Ranch RV Park in a place other than the desert - and Mt Shasta is a place I love. Happy to pay a modest rent for a home base, and happy to be a good citizen. Just don't ask me to be a part of the management!

what is not me....wanting anyone in my inner circle LOL
Not for me truly cause being a super loaner type this type of arrangement is not me.

but for many, yes I see it as a wonderful opportunity!
I see you could easily develop this but watch any zoning and more ya know......the gov got the screws into how many on land and more shared home and septic etc.........dot the Is and cross the Ts for truly a non-negative go for what you desire on it all. Lawyer up a bit and be sure it works but yea, for some, very appealing, for me, wouldn't touch it with a 39 1/2 ft pole so it is all about who wants and doesn't. best of luck moving forward!!

Caballo Loco is a community and depends on volunteers for many things. It is done to keep costs down and insure people’s safety plus it allows those that need social activity to get it. They have meals every few days or weeks. If you hear or see a car alarm going off it means someone is having a medical emergency. When you get an annual lease you will most likely volunteer with a lot of nice people to help out maintaining the place a little.

In no county in California can you live in a vehicle.

don’t know exact rules for tiny house communities.

The big issue would be who actually owns the land.

Once ownership is decided and you begin to take on "temporary" residents, it can be extremely difficult to evict them if the need should ever arise, even if they are renting or leasing.

You would want to go with very short-term lease options. 3 months or something like that.
