What type of outdoor rug do you have?

Hi folks,

I'm looking into getting an outdoor rug to help not tracking in more dirt than I have to. Especially with 2 small dogs. I don't want anything that weighs a ton or becomes too bulky when rolled up. What kind of outdoor rug(s) do you use?

at the moment I have a couple of sheets of Neoprene. I also like the artificial grass and dogs love it. you can usually find cutoffs from installers for free or cheap. my dog would role around on the fake stuff as if it were real grass. highdesertranger

I have a cgear sand free mat, which I love.

Don’t care for the fake grass, found this in kind of a light tan, and sand and dirt really do fall right through it.

Picked mine up in the sale bin somewhere, have had it in daily use for almost 4 years. Cuts down hugely on the sand and other dirt from outside, plus keeps things like thorns and pine needles outside. My dog loves to hang out on it. It's a safe space for her. Makes the campsite look civilized, too.

I'm using a door mat. Works pretty well. It's small enough to strap on the carrier on top of everything so I don't have to store it inside.

I don't like the fake grass either, as it can be deadly slippery when wet, and will hold water for a long time. It's also pretty difficult to sweep clean.

Re not wanting weight, you can buy for that, but you can't get much bigger than a doormat before things get very bulky. I've got a woven plastic mat, but it's useful to me only at a size which is pretty darn bulky.

With dogs especially, they track in so much dirt that a small mat does almost nothing to collect it off their feet before they get inside.

When we traveled with a dog, we trained him to stop and sit on the doormat and hold up a paw. We kept a towel just for wiping his feet by the door. This greatly reduced what he tracked into the van. We used the doormat to stomp our feet on. Shook it out when it got too dirty.

The cgear mat actually folds up pretty compactly.

Mine is medium sized, 5x7 or so, so doesn’t take up a tremendous amount of space.

I keep a towel by the door, too, and wipe my dogs feet when they are muddy or otherwise covered with crud.

I also keep a soft brush by the door that I use on the floor and also the dogs paws when we’re in sand.

It doesn’t keep it all out, but anything helps.

What I like about this mat is that I can sit outside on a clean surface barefoot, if I want, which is nice for early morning coffee and late day sipping of wine.

I've tried various things and eventually realized I didn't really need one. Besides, the bottom would get moist causing dirt to cling to it. I'd have to clean the thing before packing it away into something that would collect all the dirt I couldn't get off the mat/rug. Of course, I had to spike the mat/rug down to keep it from folding over or blowing away. And it took up room inside, so if I was Wallydocking or something similar where I couldn't deploy the mat/rug, I had to climb over it.

There are also those mats that fit around individual RV/trailer steps. Camco and others make them. That would give them extra opportunity to get rid of a bit of crud.

Astroturf (green or tan plastic grass entry mat) cut to size and glued to the entry steps.  Gives good purchase to the pup and collects an amazing amount of dirt.

I use an RV patio mat of these outside my door. I bought the 5x7' size at one of the booths in Quartzite 3 years ago for $15.00 IIRC and it's still going strong.

One of the things I like about it is that it can be left on top of grass for weeks without killing the grass unlike most mats including fake grass. It washes easily and after being wet and muddy sheds the dirt.

I do put it in a large green garbage bag to store it in the back of the van when travelling because, other than shaking any loose dirt off, I don't bother to clean it when packing!

rv patio mat. thing is indestructible and watches off with water fast/easy and dries fast. Brooms off easily. Shake the sucker only to get off leaves etc and fold up. Just a very easy thing to own and I require easy Folds up to nothing size. Love them....have 2. One near rv steps, one under where the grill is. They last forever.

We have a rubber roll up mat that is about 20' long and 36" wide that unrolls easily, and also stores easily. My wife also has a 9'x12' reversible patio mat that keeps the debris from being tracked in. It also keeps the crawling critters, hot sand, and annoying weeds at bay.

I have a soft, handled bag that came with an RV mat purchased many years ago, but one of those super large ziploc bags would be easy to manage and work to keep dirt from getting elsewhere.

I put the bag in the well by the passenger side door, as it’s just me so I use that area for storage.

I like having a smaller mat because some places don’t like them on the ground, or limit their size, because they will kill grass.

I use a regular small doormat from wm. However, when laid outside in New Bern, North Carolina and it rained the mat turned into a skateboard.

It looks like the exact same mat at WalMart (6x9 at least) can be had for 5 bucks less with Prime shipping from Amazon. Just search for patio RV mat.

Edit: I just saw a burgundy version for 15 bucks, nice!

How do you guys store these large outdoor rugs?

My 5x7 folds in half lengthwise so that's 40" and then rolls or folds up so that it's only about 8 or 9" in diameter. I use a bungie cord to hold it rolled up and then put it in a large green garbage bag that's way too big but I've not gotten around to making a carrying case for it!

It takes up about the same roof as most fold up lawn chairs do.
