What kind of material are you using to assemble cabinetry? I like the rubbermaid drawers that seem to be so popular, but I'm not really sure about whether to build a frame for them from wood or use something more lightweight. Is there any sort of rigid plastic that you could adjust to an appropriate size that might be less heavy?

Might be able to bolt a metal or aluminum frame from angle stock. Add a piece of plywood on top for a table surface. Let the lip on the Rubbermaid slide over the angle to hang in place. Some angled metal has holes spaced along it making it lighter and easier to bolt (no drilling required). Probably have to brace it in several directions for stability. Or a thin piece (1/8") of plywood as a back for bracing.

Think of those inexpensive metal shelves one can buy...lightweigth, cheap and sturdy enough if braced well.

Can't think of any plastic panels sturdy enough.

Not sure how strong they would be, but you could always use multiple layers of leftover election signs There are tons of them around. Can't beat the price and I believe they are a fluted plastic type design that can be pretty rigid and light.

Re-purposing is fun too!

With an Engineering back ground I always design and build with strength in mind... In my van I designed around two different drawer sets, a 3 drawer wider set and a 2 drawer deeper set... my table is 4' x 3' and has a sink and elec. water pump... The table is made of 2x4 support legs at each corner, 2x4's on the front and ends, and the top is 3/4 plywood...

Next step for me is to build up and it is to be 3x2 shelf for more storage...

Besides the 5 drawers under it I also store out of the way two 12V deep cells, solar controller, 5 gal water jug and my cordless drill set... Also under the table is allot of hidden wiring for lights etc... All can be easily accessed by removing the drawers for maintenance or added wiring...

My advice is to over build, then there is room to add from a stable strong platform...
