Today I'm lounging in my van reading and listening to music. I'm at a park with a bike path nearby in a medium-size Midwestern city.

A guy in his mid-30's or so rides up and asks me if I'm homeless.  I said,"No, I'm just houseless and travelling in my  van".

He then asks me if I need money. Again, I say, "No, I'm on Social Security and I'm fine but thanks for your concern".

My van is older but really isn't in bad shape. I'm always dressed casually but don't think I look too shabby. The need to shave is less now because I always wear a mask when I go shopping, etc. but I go ahead and shave everyday.

Anyway, that was nice to experience on this Sunday afternoon. YMMV

There are still good people out there.

Hope we will be able to deal with the many newly homeless that will almost certainly be evicted soon.

There are many newly homeless due to west coast fires. Normally we could get FEMA mobile housing units but this year... so many more than normal. I have my van but so many have nothing.

TA, you also saved your cargo trailer and personal possessions too, didn't you?

I fear what will happen when the stimulus checks (or the promise of getting them) stops, and the eviction restriction is lifted. Next Spring will be a tough time for many who are living thin.

Yes, some of my personal possessions are saved but didn't have time to get all. Lost many things. Many people had 5 minutes to get things.. my son and daughter ... and others were at work and got no opportunity to get things. Terrible... but I'm grateful to have the van and cargo trailer.

On the brighter side, you still have 2 places to live, van and trailer. Good incentive to finish the conversions. You can rent a small storage locker someplace to hold some things and hit the road.

I was wondering, do the utility people turn off the electricity and gas to the neighborhoods when this sort of thing happens?

They had an interview on NPR with someone who had evacuated from the North Complex fire north of Sacramento, and which ran up the Feather River canyon above Oroville (remember the dam almost collapsing several years ago). 260,000 acres.

The people have had to eveacuate now from 2 or 3 different fires, and they mentioned the value of having vehicles packed and ready to go quickly, and also of having all the important documents on hand.
