waste solutions?

I'm in the process of designing and building my very tiny kitchen, and I'm curious how people deal with waste. What kind of systems do people have in place for recycle, trash, compost etc.

I'm thinking of separating burnables for starting fires in my wood stove, but as for the rest I'm not sure. Anyone compost in their van? Where do you dispose of waste?

I drop trash in containers at filling stations or campgrounds, rest areas, some Walmarts.
Recyclables wherever I come across community bins, sometimes it is easier to trash it...
Burnables go to campfires
Food scraps- I have a dog that eats anything that doesn't eat her first.

As a trash bin I use a 3 gallon plastic bucket lined with a shopping bag from Wal-Mart. No recycling everything goes in the bag then it ends up in the trash bins by the shopping cart returns at Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart gives it and Wal-Mart takes it away, it’s a modern day biblical verse.

I have been wondering the same thing. I'm glad you brought it up. Since I'll be local for a while and Portland makes it pretty easy to recycle it should be OK while I stay local. I did have visions of dropping compost and recycling off in random bins after dark on garbage night. Thought thru most of it. Theory is nice but we shall see how it happens in practice. On the road might be a different story. Looking forward to hearing how others deal with it. I'd hate to have to change my recycling just because I live in a van.

gypsychic, I had the same thought about stealth dropping in random bins. Seattle just made it illegal to trash food waste, so there are lots of yard waste containers around, maybe I can coordinate with collection days so it's less obvious.

I'm hoping that living in my van will help me cut down on waste in general, or at least encourage me to be more thoughtful about it.

and yes, another excuse to get a dog!

Our counties here once had free trash bins at various locations in the county, then they took them away.  The main landfill collection sites (not the actual landfill itself) were free after that, but now we have to pay to drop off trash.
Luckily my S&B home is out in the county so I can burn paper waste, so only take the plastic and metals.
On the road, I use Wally's and any gas station I stop at.  Some have outdoor picnic tables, so we eat a quick meal bought there, do a pit stop and drop off trash in their dumpster.

I dispose all of my waste in the trash cans at city parks or rest areas generally.

What I'd like to get hold of is an aerobic composting toilet but, for now, I use the town garbage bins. Can't really do much else where I am. In the summer I'll do the burnables thing. ..Willy.

well I try to separate, food waste usually goes down the garbage disposal(my dog). recycle goes in one bag, trash in another. combustibles get burned unless I am under fire restrictions then they have to go in the trash. gypsy I am surprised you said Oregon is easy to recycle, I hate those recycle machines they have in Oregon, cans go in one at a time and they cannot be smashed, what are you kidding? one trash bag of smashed cans is like 5+ bags of unsmashed cans, plus it takes forever to feed them through and they generally stink. not really easy or convenient. highdesertranger

@HDR - I rarely buy bottles with deposits so I hardly ever use the bottle returns. Yes I agree they do stink. I don't like to walk past them. I only drink filtered tap water or hot tea currently. I'll have 2 start buying water once I'm in my van.
Recycling being curbside and all together in one bin is easier than sorting in a recycling center by each plastic #, separating different kinds of paper, etc. Its all in perspective I guess.
