Wish I could say I was surprised.  I am, of course, appalled.  There does seem to be a growing awareness of, and backlash against, asset forfeiture, and I believe stuff like this will only help increase it.

In the meantime, this provides yet another argument for only using credit cards and never debit cards.  And keep all checkbooks, atm cards, etc. in a locked compartment when you are not actually using them.  AFAIK, they still need an actual search warrant to get into locked containers and for THAT they need to convince a judge of probable cause.

I like to see myself as someone who, in general, supports police officers. But this is just another example of things that make it hard to see them as anything more than armed enforcers for an over-reaching and corrupt government.

Red light traffic cameras are the same scam. In areas where they are used the amount of time the light is yellow is reduced so that the camera can catch the licence plate under a red light. The business that operates the cameras and the cash strapped jurisdictions make money, so no point in being fair.

I've actually seen this happen on 'Cops' or some similar police reality show. At the time it struck me as very fishy and probably unconstitutional.

I thought I read somewhere that they were going to put an end to this whole asset seizing thing.

I go under the pretense that I don't commit crimes, I don't look like a criminal, I don't frequent areas known for crime so my chances of ever having this happen to me is basically non existent. I'm also a believer in statistics and if you took the number of cars pulled over every year vs the number of those that had assets seized I know the odds would be so low it's not worth worrying about. On top of that, I haven't been pulled over in 15 years so my chances are looking really good this will never be an issue for me. Better odds of dying in an accident or having my identity stolen and that doesn't stop me from traveling.

"Here's how it works. If a trooper suspects you may have money tied to some type of crime, the highway patrol can scan any cards you have and seize the money. ""

BE SMART!! I don't know many Nomads that have a lot of money left over at the end of the Month where this would be an issue...

You cannot live life in fear of everything...

You don't need to be in a bad neighborhood. If you drive on the interstate, you could be pulled over. Besides, if you are new in town, how do you know what neighborhood you are driving through? They could see your out of area licence plates as a delivery vehicle.

I like what one poster said "Have a locked compartment thus requiring a warrant" I'd prefer a "Hidden" one which looks like a common thing and thus avoids the issue...

Really sad this country has become such....

"Freedom means nothing left to lose."

Meanwhile, boycott Oklahoma.

The corps that market the technology to aid this need some unwanted attention.

Then I default to statistics.  Number of vehicles pulled over per year divided by number that has any assets seized and the odds equal it's most likely never going to happen.  The only other choice is to stay  home hiding in your house and that seems worse than the alternative.

This was considered to be more of a State of the Union thing, an FYI, not a fear mongering presentation. Personally, I find this development alarming, especially after having read quite a few stories where forfeiture has been abused. Unfortunately, this is the way things are going. I'd like to think that situational awareness, coupled with some really good ideas to avoid/mitigate the issue (thanks Optimistic Paranoid!), is a much better tactic than burying your head in the sand. This would surely be a way to eliminate an 'undesirable' person parked in the wrong place, at the wrong time. A person that may have nowhere to turn.

I will post info that I think fellow dwellers can benefit from; Knowledge Is Power. When I read that article, it occurred to me how devastating this situation would be to a typical vandweller. I guess, maybe, I care about my fellow man/woman?

To those that disagree , or find it to be useless information, To Each His Own.

I don't know how this isn't a violation of the 4th amendment. Why are the Feds not stepping in?
This is a seizure of property without due course. Maybe reverse lawsuits will be necessary. Including going after the bonds of the Officers.

Ahh, statistics.  Statistically, it's extremely unlikely that you will be struck by lightening, but that still doesn't mean it's a good idea to run around a golf course in a thunderstorm waving your 9 iron over your head.

Nobody is suggesting that you stay home hiding in your house.  I'm suggesting that you travel smart, not stupid.

Carrying large amounts of cash in "hidden" compartments is traveling stupid.  Nothing suggests ill-gotten gains like lots of cash in a hidden compartment.  Instead, pay for everything with your credit card and pay it off in full every month.  That's travelling smart.

Hate to tell you this, but they don't need a warrant, just probable cause
If they can seize your assets, they have probable cause (suspected criminal activity is probable cause)
On the plus side, with electronic banking, you really don't need an atm card or a checkbook, just a credit card from your bank
doesn't change the fact that this is totally unconstitutional

Unfortunately, it was the Feds who started this nonsense with a law they passed in 1980.  And even if a state does away with civil forfeiture under their own laws, the local cops can STILL do it under Federal law, and the Feds will reward them with 80% of the take.

We don't just have laws against drugs, we have a War on Drugs, which is basically a CRUSADE being run by zealots.  Ever hear the phrase "We had to destroy the hamlet in order to save it"?

I read awhile back that the Feds were doing away with the incentive that let's the local police keep 80%  Found this article that relates to it.  Maybe why Oklahoma Police decided to cut out the middle man?  The middle man being the fed's
