For a long time I've tried to convince myself I needed a smartphone but just couldn't justify the cost.

Instead I had a 10 gig data plan using a JetPack and a pay-as-you-go phone. That worked fine.

But I'm pushing hard against my 10 gig limit and twice now I've had my JetPack fail leaving me without internet and I just can't have that! With the Blog and the Forum I need constant access.

I just heard that for this month only Verizon is taking their Share Everything plan and doubling the data for free and calling it the More EVerything plan.

So I went down and signed right up. Here is the way it works.

I get a Samsung Note 3 smartphone with unlimited voice and text along with 30 gigs of data for $130 a month. I kept my Mifi and it's part of the Share Everything plan and it costs a total of $40 a month extra.

So for $170 a month I have the two devices sharing 30 gigs a month and unlimited talk and text. If either device fails, I can still get online!! I'm extremely pleased with it and have fallen in love with the Note 3!

Up till now the best deal on data was Millenicom which gave you 20 gigs on Verizon for $90 a month. This is only $40 more but it gives you an extra 10 gigs but it also gives you unlimited talk and text on a smartphone. It's the best deal out their right now.

ATT is offering a similiar deal, but once you leave the cities they suck! I know dozens of people who dropped them like a rock and switched to Verizon because they couldn't get a signal while traveling. If you never travel, they are great though.

But the Verizon deal is only till the end of the month. If you have a current Verizon plan, you can upgrade to it!

Something else you can do is go in on it with a friend or family member and cut the price in half! Each would get unlimited talk and text and 30 gigs to share (15 gigs each). Go in with a 3rd person and cut it by a third and each have unlimited talk and text and have 30 gigs to share between you, (10 gigs each). Turns into an amazing deal!

Verizon just swollowed up all of Millinicoms customer base in a deal.......waiting to see the outcome!!

Bob,

I'm happy for you! You'll like the Samsung Note 3, I have the same smartphone. Just get a high speed 64gb card to go with it for all your media files and you're all set.

By the way, I bought 2 more Citizen Ecodrive watches for a total of 4 this summer. Sick, I know, haha!

Bob, follow up in a few days and let us (me) know if you have any issues with dropped calls. I switched to Verizon and their larger network because I have to send "Readings" from my pacemaker to Medtronic. Three different occasions my calls or connections have been dropped. It's not a critical or emergency type reading, just checks the battery level and connections of the device. Maybe it's my phone. I talked to Verizon Tech guys and they can see all the dropped calls on their records. Hope you have better luck with them than I do.

I guess if one has a business to run, it might be deemed acceptable. However that seems to me well beyond the budget and need of many on limited income.

For someone who runs an internet business, it's always a good idea to have a backup. Actually, a better backup is to have 2 different carriers, in case say Verizon is down on a particular day which has been known to happen from time to time. In Bob's case, having 2 different devices for internet connectivity is better than 1 device. However, it would be better still to have a 2nd device operated by say AT&T or maybe Sprint. It would be a rare occurrence to have 2 different cell phone companies to be down at the same time. If that rare occurrence does happen, maybe a huge disaster would be to blame. But let's not go there, haha!

Just researched AT&T a little because our phones are on tracfone-riding-on-verizon and AT&T has plans that don't require phones.

BUT AT&T says no service available in CO or NM, so scratch that. Looking like Verizon for us...

Love, your plan might be a little different than ours but our AT&T does work in both CO and NM. It's pretty rare for us to not have service. We have 450 minutes on our phone and 5G of data on our hot spot for $100.00 a month including fees and taxes. Coverage map - https://www.att.com/maps/wireless-coverage.html#fbid=oKYwZFtACOg

Tony and Karen, ATT also has the great deal now. My guess it's the same as what I have and you can upgrade to it.

That means that for another $30 a month you could jump up to unlimited talk and get an extra 25 gigs of data.

It's easy to say that you don't need that kind of data but think of all the youtube videos, moves or TV shows you can download with the extra 25 gigs. It opens up a whole nother world of use for your data. With 5 gigs you don't even think about doing those things, but with 30 you could.

Most smart phones will let you use your laptop for the download and watch them on the laptop or you can connect the snartphone or laptop to your TV and watch on it.

It's not for everyone but it's something to consider.

Casey, I have to many friends with ATT and they travel the same remote routes I do and their data seldom works.

I wouldn't consider anyone but Verizon.

I have to say this is one of the SCARIEST things I have to deal with. In my Biz I need data and I need it FAST :).

Bob have you monitored the actual speeds you get in various locations?

I was just thinking of a Windows 8.0 to 8.1 upgrade, holy smokes. The DL is 3.8 Gigs!!! and how long would that take? I got it on my Time Warner service yesterday in less than an hour. Oh boy~!

I'm in one of the few places in the us that doesn't have verizon service :/ not even landline...they sold it to a crappy local company and ran for (out of) the hills .

@MikeRuth, when you know you have large downloads like that, go to a public library, coffee shop, etc and use their free Wifi. Saves you loads of data!

As for speeds, if you are getting LTE signal (which isn't usually that hard to find), then it's pretty much as fast as any other broadband internet. You can watch Netflix/youtube/etc without problems with an LTE signal on Verizon, BUT watching Netflix/etc would use up your data very very quickly, so be very very careful if you do something like that!

With Love,
Tara

I'm at the same spot as you were at, Bob. I haven't found a reason to justify buying a smart phone but when I heard about the extra data deals I started looking into it. It's tempting. :) You're right - for $30.00 more we'd get unlimited talk and 30 gigs but by the time all of the taxes and fees are added on it's about $170.00 which is a little more than I want to spend. We still have a couple more week to decide. :-D

Money creep- finding new ways to spend more and more of your money until you have none ; ).

I am indeed a data addict!! :)

However, if I cut back on my data, this forum and blog dissappear!!

POOF, they are gone!

I can almost gaurantee that unless your daughter is on the Verizon network that 90% of the time I wouldn't have data access where I live.

Again, POOF, they are gone!

I can almost gaurantee that they throttle her after a few gigs

Again, POOF, they are gone!

I did my phone and web access a not very smart way. I had my iPhone, with an AT&T contract, from my pre-vandwelling days. (My land line, net and TV were all AT&T, so I went that way with the cell phone, too.) It had a small data allowance because I didn't need much when I was a building dweller. I wasn't on the net away from home except to look up something now and then. After running up some outrageous excess data charges while vandwelling (it being my only net connection other than public hot spots), I got a Verizon JetPack. All they offered at the time were 5GB and 10GB options. I went with the 10GB but was running out before the end of the month. One day, I figured, what the hell, I'll get a 20GB Millenicom JetPack, too. WOO! 30GB. And the Millenicom one booted faster. But even with paying three different companies for phone and data, it still worked out less than paying overages.

So, it looks like it's finally the time to bundle everything. I hope Verizon doesn't make it too painful for us ex-Millenicom users.

theyll prolly give mill users a introductory break at first to appease
