Back in the van and ready to head to warmer weather... get some!

Not really sure what we are going to be doing just yet, other than a couple hangouts with friends for Xmas and New Years down in AZ (of course). [font=Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif]We have three months back in the van before heading back to the boat. Oh man I've missed this old guy.

Cool, and welcome to the forum. I love those land formations in the picture. What are they? Why aren't they flat?

" Why this place is not a National Park I do not know"

because I believe it's private property I will check later to see if it is.

Welcome back, missed your escapades.

Trona Pinnacles seems to be BLM land and a national natural landmark from what I can find.

ah I stand corrected. y'all are right they are on BLM land. I just checked the land status. highdesertranger

Nearly lost our van-mojo

[size=small]It took driving all day, but we made it a little over half way down the Oregon coast. The mileage numbers are not impressive by any means, as we did stop for a late breakfast, an auto parts store for some tune-up items, and a few pee breaks along the way. The idea was to simply revisit one of the great boondocking we found not far out of Florence back in 2018. Problem is, our memories of the area was not detailed enough for us to chose an exact location. Kerri did keep some records of cell signal for some of the spots, and I had some memory of a few myself. Unfortunately, my memory was completely wrong, and her records didn’t pan out much either. The lack of cell signal kept us searching for the final couple hours of daylight, leading to a quite grumpy set of van-tramps.

Eventually we conceded that we would not be boondocking for our work week. It was too late in the day to keep driving up and down random dirt roads, so we settled on our fall back campground at Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park where we have stayed once before. It really hurts my ego to already be paying for a week in a campground, but at least the place is pretty much empty, and we do have electricity in our site – which means we can run our heater for a more comfortable stay. I even got to knock out that tune-up on Big Blue while here… so there is that.

During the first few days we are finding out about all the miscellaneous items we accidentally left behind on Meriwether. Some are pretty essential to our normal life routines, but I’m sort of excited about living without them for three months. Who knows, maybe we will find that we really do not need those particular items. Wouldn’t that be great?

Welcome back. Now that you painted Big Blue, I suggest the name "Brown Streak". LOL

I see another RV in the background, you need to keep going.

Setting up a home in two different locations is a pain. I now have 3 jumper packs in Arizona and need one of those for my fishing light in Utah! I've got three of everything and can't seem to remember where even one of them is so I may end up with more when i figure out I can't do without it, sort of a double edged sword! LOL!!!

We looked into it last time we were here. Internet is not good down there and we must work Tue-Fri

Saved by all star liquors

We made it through our first week back in the van, albeit having to stay at a state park for the electricity – as there would be no solar to speak of all week. Things weren’t too bad with the campground pretty much all our own, practically hourly Moose walks, and free hot showers just a few yards away. I would spend the week getting a few odd jobs done on the van, but leaving the larger re-organizing of all our stuff until Kerri completed a side-quest; purchasing liquor. No need to organize if that large of an influx was coming on the weekend, right?

Even though we had electricity, we were running our house battery down.  See, one of the items we forgot last week was the 120 volt battery charger, which is now hard wired into the boat. So, even with an electrical outlet right there, our battery was not getting a charge from it, or the sun. We were relying on the engine to recharge the Lithium as we drove.

That Friday night we drove a few hours south on Highway 101. The drive would help break up a long day of driving on Saturday as well as charging up our house battery a bit… or so we thought. It was here that we found that the engine was only charging the battery at 1-2 amps, which would literally take eight straight days to do the job. We spent the night on the side of the road (regaining some van-mojo), in the wind and rain. Sure, the spot we chose had one of those signs with a red line through a tent, but Kerri justified it with a well known van-guy saying, “We aren’t camping. We are just overnight parking”. It can be used in reverse if the sign says no-overnight-parking too; “We aren’t overnight parking, we are camping”. It’s a genius get-out-of-jail-free card that the cops simple can not argue, so they left us alone that night. Saturday morning we woke with only 25% charge remaining on the battery – going below 20% is a bad thing.

By 10 AM we were arriving at the California border (nope, no fruit in this van), and the eighth wonder of the world; All Star Liquors. Kerri didn’t even wait for the van to come to a stop before jumping out the door. I figured I had a couple hours to kill so got to walking Moose around for a few minutes, then into trouble shooting our charging issues. I was hard at the job when the side door of the van jerked open. Kerri was already back, with a box of booze so large it came with it’s own full sized man to deliver it. “Just shove that in the back, I’m working on this” I said, hiding my surprise at how quickly she accomplished that whole thing. A few minutes later I found the problem – the wire was now frayed and grounding out – and put a band-aid on it for now. It’s the vanlife way. I will replace the entire wire in a few days when I have the time, and the wire. At least now we were getting some charge to the battery while driving, saving us from certain calamity. In my memory, as I write this, I’m pretty sure that Kerri cheered out loud and chanted my name in celebration for the fix… yea… I’m pretty sure.

Cool. Kerri sounds like the perfect traveling companion, :). I was wondering two things. Off hand, what is your favorite restaurant in Florence? I remember some nice ones down along the river. I'm hoping to go through there next summer. I'm also using your website for reference material on the Oregon coast. Thank you for that.

Also, which route are you gonna follow heading south? There are several options. If you happen to go past Clear Lake and onto Rte 20, there was a huge fire around Clear Lake a year ago, that burned half million acres or so. I'm kind of wondering what the area looks like today.
