I have been having a hard time finding someone to insure Maxine. I thought it would be easy, but for some reason, I've been denied coverage from almost everybody. I think that the main problem is that they don't have any problem insuring the van itself, but the fact that they don't want to insure everything else. Any advice?

Most every insurance company out there starts running scared the minute you say the words DIY conversion....my advice....forget you ever thought of the phrase. Do not tell your insurance company/broker that you've 'modified', 'fixed up, converted to an RV' etc.

If you're trying to insure a regular van,  you have a couple of options; just get regular vehicle insurance on it and self insure your contents. If you've put any substantial amount of money in to the vehicle itself (as opposed to the interior), then take a look at insurance that is 'stated value' coverage.

If the jurisdiction you're in allows you to actually change the description legally of the vehicle from truck or van to RV then you MIGHT be able to find an insurance company that will give you coverage for an RV but only after it meets both the DMV and the insurance companies concept of what an RV is.

If you're going full time then there you might contact someone through Escapees or Good Sam that can provide full timer RV coverage for you.

Personally, I carry stated value coverage on the van and keep a tenants policy so that my contents are covered. Not sure how worthwhile that is since the deductible is separate and high. It would only kick in if I experienced a total loss and I might be better putting the premiums in a savings account for future use!
