It sounds to me like you need to carry an alternate heat source that does not use electricity...just in case. You can get 4 to 5 hours of heat from a 1lb green bottle with a small Mr. Buddy, that should be enough to get the batteries warmed up so that the generator can top them up and get the furnace powered back on. Running the generator while it is also running the furnace won't give you the juice you need for a strong charge rate. So let the propane heat take care of warming the place during that emergency situation if the battery has shut off. There is more than one way to solve a temporary crisis of not enough heat.
