No, big rigs are not insulated for the heat/cold. You're right in assuming that the Option mentioned is more of a sound deadener than actual temperature insulation.

You ought go to a truck show sometime, or maybe cruise thru a truck stop and look for a *Chicken Truck*. Some of the owner/operator trucks are unbelievable. I've seen waterbeds, full showers, stoves, couches, tile floor, real wood flooring.... stuff you wouldn't believe.
Guys with big fancy trucks will be more than happy to show them off to you. The bigger the bunk, the more lights, the more chrome - the happier they'll be to show 'n tell.
It's a matter of Pride.
Installing all that stuff (even lots of LEDS/Chrome on the outside) and maintaining it is very time consuming and costly.

*Chicken truck* - does not necessarily haul chicken. It's any fancy, shiny, well maintained truck with lots and lots of extra lights, chrome & usually a custom paint job. Doesn't matter what it hauls
I drive a truck. Am currently sitting in a pretty nice Volvo. Has only 14,*** miles on it. I have driven Macks, Kenworths, Freightliners, Peterbilts, and now this Volvo....and one thing is true of them all...They are either too hot, or too cold. They arent insulated for hoot, and the heaters either blow coolish air, or you turn them up one or 2 notches, and they fry you out the truck. And the A/C isnt significantly better. If you are in your truck, and you have it pretty comfy, as soon as you shut off the motor, to stop burning a a gallon and a half of 4 dollar fuel an hour, you notice the temp becoming decidedly uncomfy almost immediately. So, as far as a fulltimer vehicle, dont look at a used semi, unless you want to do more work to it thatn you would any other project vehicle.

You could just roll your own APU with a generator and small a/c unit. A lot quieter I too trucked for awhile and had two trucks with APU's and 1 where I pulled reefer trailers. Whenever a truck parked next to me with an APU or reefer, I moved if possible, very loud and not conducive to good sleep.
