I have been toying with the idea of finding like minded travelers to caravan with from place to place though.&nbsp;Something along the lines of tribal migration during the seasons. Maybe not even stay in the exact same place so much as keeping within driving distance of each other. I know some people like to be alone, but still have friends/help close.&nbsp;<div><br></div><div>Just a thought/idea that I haven't fully formed yet.
</div><div><br></div></span>

<P><b>Sounds like this is the new thread for potential caravans. I would like to be&nbsp;loosely involved with like minded caravaners. Point A to point B may work for some of us, not for others. Driving distances and expected times of arrivals could be helpful. I have done this in the past with fellow horsewomen when we travel from state to state. We have saved each others hides and horses more than once, esp picking up horses from broken down rigs. Off subject but the general idea.&nbsp; Thanks Dust and Steve.</b></P>

<div><br></div><div>That's exactly what I was thinking too. Keep it loose so that people can drop in and out as it suits their plans. Nothing formal other than simple handshakes between parties who want to go to the same places.</div><div><br></div>

exactly! i have done this with different vandwellers, hopscotching around adjoining states, and using phones and internet to keep track of one another. i moseyed around the southwest camping with Bri, and we'd take off and meet-up again when somebody found a cool spot. then i met up with Swankie at Quartzsite, where we were joined by Cheri and Bri and others. we went our separate ways with the destination of Pahrump, but each took their own time and route (some wa-a-a-y longer than others) to get there. enroute, we notified each other of weather, road conditions, ice locations, whether to park for the night or make a dash across a desolate area....it was great! we camped in Pahrump for several weeks, and during that time we often left camp to explore alone or to have some alone time camping in the hills. the ebb and flow is terrific, and that sense of community always nearby, but nobody thinks twice when you pull outta camp. somebody always had your back, and occasional shared meals or campfires, without strict schedules is perfect for me. we took road trips to vegas for provisions and a change of pace....i'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Another sort of thought or twist on this idea is a sort of cluster concept. Of course there are many areas around the country that have clusters of folks staying more long term like at Quartzsite, slabs, Parumph, etc. Even here in our area (The Olympic Peninsula), there are several vandwellers in a town that go from camp to camp. I bet it wouldn't take too much to figure out a clever way to network these "clusters" perhaps even using concepts from old hobo camps combined with internet savvy to make local resources and friends known to each other without having it completely open to everyone with a computer. A person could travel easily and not by any particular schedule to the cluster areas and be able to have some confidence due to the info and references provided.&nbsp;<div><br></div><div>Not too much different from what already is in place, just maybe more organization of info and resources. Just thinking outloud <img src="/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" align="absmiddle">&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Hope that isn't too much of a deviation on the OT. If so, please feel free to move it to a differen't or new thread.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div>

I like to nickname stuff and thought of a name for this loose knit tribe.<div><br></div><div>Omani Okablaya - Sioux for Travel Freely. Omani for short.</div><div><br></div>

Steve: i love that! is omani the word for "travel" or "freely"?<div><br></div><div>Mike: i love that idea, and don't think it off-topic, although we can defer to the OP (steve) and start a new thread if he wants.</div><div><br></div><div>i think it fits in well with the concept, no matter where we discuss it. i have long loved hobo stories and hobo signs:</div><div><br></div><div><a href="http://twokniveskatie.blogspot.com/2008/02/hobo-signs.html" target="_blank">http://twokniveskatie.blogspot.com/2008/02/hobo-signs.html</a></div><div><br></div><div><a href="http://cyberhobo.com/signs/hobosigns.html" target="_blank">http://cyberhobo.com/signs/hobosigns.html</a></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, Okabla-a-a-y-a...<br><br>(Couldn't help myself)<br>

<div><br></div><div>Omani = Travel</div><div>Okablaya = Freely</div><div><br></div><div>The only thing I haven't verified is if it's masculine or feminine or both.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>I think what Mike put forth fits in perfectly with this. The tribe doesn't have to travel as one contiguous group at all times. Like water, we can join, separate, re-join, or re-separate when needed.</div><div><br></div>

I would be very interested in picking up with some other females especially when I first get out there. I'm 36, female and will be traveling alone aside from my cats. I'm very much a loner but knowing that I may be of help or there is help close by who will understand my living choices is a comforting thought. I'm hoping to be on the road in the next month or so and am starting out in Maryland.<br>

Great idea, Steve... This way, members can join/leave the caravan in various intervals, as the tribe migrates...&nbsp;&nbsp; I'm actively looking for acreage (in Colorado?) like this for getaways, tribal gatherings etc..&nbsp; Keep an eye out for me.<br><br>

How many of you use smart phones, laptops, or other connected devices? I've thought about building an app/web utility that would help people organize around this principle. The idea has appeared in a variety of incarnations -- bum signs, in science fiction, social/behavioral economics. Nothing permanent but the organizing principle.

How would you manifest this into a usable app though?<div><br></div><div>I know most have laptops but not all would have smartphones.</div><div><br></div>

FB page devoted tribal matters. Members only.

Think GPS enabled Ning with maps. &nbsp; The feature set could be very basic.<div><br></div><div>1) Broadcast your current position to other network members</div><div>2) See other network members on a map or by proximity</div><div>3) Maybe a "route to"feature that would allow you to pick a spot or network member and find your way there.</div><div>4) The ability to leave notes on locations behind (like hobo signs, e.g. this place is good, this place is dangerous, watch out for cops, etc)</div><div><br></div>

Rethinking the FB post. Google + is more private and dedicated - a Tribe circle created for notifications only to members. Acquire a free gmail account under username, and free google+ account. Access with any device and the entirety of Google features available for use from one page.

I created a circle called Nomads. You can add me with Saguache(at)me.com

Great idea, let's give it a try

I have a lap top and a Smart Phone, just not smart enough to use it...<img src="/images/boards/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" align="absmiddle">
