The most annoying thing about vandwelling

Yeah, they're all cute little buggers up close. Those spiders have 8 eyes, including 2 on the back of their heads. The 2 large ones give them true binocular vision for running down prey.

That cute little spider face reminded me of Liv's other story about how she had been transformed into a cockroach and woke up each morning to see the following face in the mirror. The gal who puts herself to sleep every night reading ghost stories. All the wild beasts in the woods aren't enough for her to worry about, LOL.

I think I have a photo in the "pet photos" thread of one of my pet Central American Deaths-Head Cockroaches.

Cute little dudes. :)

I mind the wildlife a lot less than I mind the sap from trees like cottonwoods.  I had to park under cottonwoods while they were dropping their horrid sticky seed pods and dripping corrosive sap all over my new to me Chevy truck.  Might have eaten through the clear coat, dang it.
I don't mind the wildlife either, though I can understand how loud that would be.  I would just worry about squirrels chewing on the solar panel cords.     Which leads me to wonder if there solar panel covers you can use to protect them from falling branches, sticky saps, etc.?

Your post reminds me that I really should add to my list of things to research, is how to identify problematic trees like this.  My van will be the first vehicle I've owned in almost 20 years.  I won't be obsessive about it, and likely won't even name it, but I will baby it with baths and maintenance.  I know it's unconventional and that most people wouldn't like it, but I'm seriously considering painting my van with Raptor paint like Mike from Backroads Vanner did in this video.

I think I finally found the most annoying thing about vandwelling...critters...on my roof!  I usually try to park under trees for shade, but I feel like that invites whatever squirrels or birds are living in said tree to decide to explore my roof...very noisily.   Has anyone else had this problem, or is it just me?  It definitely annoys me...

Turn your palm up and slap the underside of your roof hard, a couple of times if needed... they will leave and wont be back.

(probably won't work for lions and tigers and bears, but small birds and squirrels don't like it at all)

:dodgy:

"likely won't even name it"

Don't worry, Jack, we'll name it for you....not saying you'll like what we come up with, though, so to protect yourself, you'd better have a few names to pull out of the hat, LOL!

I think it’s kind of cute hearing the pitter patter of critters walking in the roof.

One of the things I'm looking forward to about van life is listening to the rain on the roof, actually. (Careful to distinguish "rain" from hail or torrential storming.)

Problem is, it's not like rain on a wooden S&B rooftop. It's more of a high-frequency ping, ping, ping plus metal resonances.

When I was a kid, we lived in a mobile home for awhile.  The rain on the roof was one of my favorite things.  I know it sounds different in a vehicle, but it still must be similar.  I would think the resonance would be dampened somewhat by the insulation and the interior wood lining of the walls.  Guess I'll find out eventually.

My aunt lived in a Quonset hut when I was a kid. When we would spend the night, the corrugated metal made raindrops sound like jackhammers. Thousands of them.

It sounds like shaking a metal garbage can half-full of marbles.   :)

being brought up on ranches and farms the sound of rain on a metal roof is a lullaby. I love it. highdesertranger

Dang, I didn't expect this thread to get so much attention...haha...was more of a humorous rant on my part. My solution was a bungee across the roof above my bed, if they wake me up I just sit up, grab the bungee, lay back down, and let go. That usually takes care of it...I did have fun just now reading some of the responses though, so it did serve as a good bit of entertainment...

Ha, ha, critters on your roof. That was the funniest post of all. We were all thinking ... boy, just wait till this guy leaves his driveway!

clatter, clatter, clatter, it could be Santa's reindeer hooves landing on the roof :) :) :)
