Firtree: shiny!!! What's the price?!? Do they ship? An anti-(electronic)spam buddy has a Costco membership, and has ordered stuff for me in the past. :)

Qxxx: Have you tried the low sodium SPAM?
I'm not a foodie, and it tastes pretty much the same as regular SPAM, to me. :)

I do hear you on the salt.
In my youth, met a few pilots who had failed their physicals due to heart issues, and they imbued in me an aversion to salty food.
When eaten in moderation, and combined with not too terrible other stuff, it's not too bad.
Notice all the waffle words there? ;)
(ohhhhh, waffles & SPAM, mmmmm)

Bottom line: I do like it, but I only consume about a half to a full can's worth per month. Without a fridge, I mostly eat Singles, though I am going to feast on that Teriyaki can next month. :)

Was about to press "Post" & saw MrNoodly's porn... Ser, your obsession with pork rectums is somewhat disturbing. ;)

Just a reminder for newcomers to this thread, Hormel has repurposed what "SPAM" stands for.
Here's two somewhat recent TV food porn promos (15 seconds each):

Mr. Noodley hahaha please report hahahaha to the YARC thread hahahahaha you definitely hahahahahahaha belong there. highdesertranger

Don’t know the price, won’t hit town till thurs or after(hate shopping), but sale flyer says $5 off and online Costco shows a pre sale price of 21.99 plus $3 delivery fee if under $75 order. I think the in store price is lower as I doubt I would have paid $22 for 8 cans of SPAM. Sale starts 4 Sept.

Looking online saw Walmart’s Great Value brand of luncheon meat in same can -$1.98, they offer low sodium and bacon flavor, didn’t see any of the other SPAM choices in generic.

—Huge jars of JIF or Skippy peanut butter also goes on sale.

I think MrNoodly must be in a very hot sunny place right now - which is almost anywhere in the west. AKA out in the sun too long.

I'm five miles from the Pacific, in the cooler band along the coast. If anything, I've been OUT of the sun too long as I've been receiving medical treatment.  :D :p :shy:

One can only imagine where you dug up those boxes of iBPR, but I'm not asking so please don't tell. Please. The YARC thread is waiting for someone to make post #1999.

. . . Science Demands that somebody Field Test this. I volunteer.

I think you'll be pretty lonely in that field.

I can't imagine anyone looking forward to eating Spam. To me, it's only a last resort when there's nothing else available, or in times of desperation. The last few years, I've been pretty broke and desperate but couldn't bring myself to eat it. I haven't had Spam in decades and am happy to continue without it for a few more - BUT finding out there's a Spam Museum has piqued my interest!

Firtree: excellent find of the low sodium GreatValue faux-SPAM! I'll check that out next time I get to a Walmart (it's been 4 months since my last city visit).

Qxxx: I second your nomination that MrNoodly post that as YARC #1999! Then Popeye can push it over the top. :D

And now, must try to educate this Foodie Infidel... ;)

I'm laughing inside as I type this...
It's a good thing you've admitted to being a Foodie and have generally high quality posts. ;)

If you read upthread, you'll see that many of us genuinely like SPAM.
Part of it is it's a comfort food.
Part is knowing meals in which it tastes best.
Please check out those very-short YT vids I posted for examples. :)
The very first time I had it was with eggs on a childhood summer camp canoe trip. We woke to the aroma, combined with that special crisp chill of early morning in the North. It's imprinted in my brain & permanently associated with Wilderness. :)

The really big key is that for us boondockers, SPAM is an excellent match for our lifestyle. In the almost six continuous months I've been boondocking, I've never had to leave "early" for food reasons, because I carry a decent stash of mostly shelf stable food.

In your situation, that's not a factor, but keep it in mind if you ever do a more extended wander thru wild places... and bring eggs. :)

The SPAM Museum is mostly aimed at kids.
I've been to many of the great museums of the world, and it definitely ain't one of 'em. ;)

I wouldn't say I'm a hard-core foodie, but more of a low-key one. I grew up extremely poor and my mother was a terrible cook, so when I moved to NYC and discovered gourmet food, my eyes and taste buds were opened! I worked for over a decade in restaurants (from all-night Greek diners to 4-star tablecloth joints), and developed a taste for good food, though I wouldn't say I'm all that discerning nor a very good cook myself.

I'm pretty sure I have not had Spam since I was a teenager, so it's been like 40 years or so and my memories of it are not pleasant like yours are. My favorite comfort foods with fond memories are soft-boiled eggs with buttered toast torn into strips (egg with soldiers), or lumpy oatmeal with rivers of milk.

As to what I will do for meals while living out of my car in the city, I'm not sure. I can't afford to eat out all the time, so I'll have to figure something out for cooking in the car. But no, fresh food won't be hard to come by for me, so it's unlikely that I'll try Spam. I came close when I was on really hard times but just couldn't!

Sorry, not going to watch the videos you suggested, but I do know that there have been cooking competitions (televised and otherwise) using Spam.

In the 1970s I had one of those "bottles, cans and labels" recipes for Spam chop suey or chow mein. My daughter recently recalled eating it as a teen and said she thought it was gourmet food compared to my usual Midwestern offerings of meat and potatoes. All I remember is cubed spam and a lot of celery, served over rice with crisp chow mein noodles. Anybody familiar with this recipe? If so, would you please share? If it's too cumbersome for this thread my email is [email protected]. I recently bought a can of one of those Spam copy cats. Not even close! From now on its the real thing for me. Love fried Spam sammiches! Thanks for replies.

I used Google and typed in ""spam" chow mein recipe" and got a lot of hits. I would think a lot of the ham recipes that you could substitute spam for the ham.

Lenny:
Yea & verily. :)
This month I've been eating a lot of ramen with freeze dried veggies, which really pumps it up. I'll be getting ice today, so will try it with both veg and part of a SPAM Single (spread over 2+ meals).

CityWoman:
"egg with soldiers" sounds yummy. :)

There's lots of easy to prepare foods that you can stock up on. Are you experimenting now? Post more info in the no-fridge thread, and we can help you. Just don't be bashing our beloved boondocking foods. ;)
As I've said here & elsewhere, one of the great things about starting in a car, is that if you switch to even a small van, it's luxury in comparison. :)
Car-living is hardcore, and really helps you to focus on what's important. :)

Sounds shiny - please post publicly, for it could not possibly be "too cumbersome". :)

Was the "SPAM copy cats" part of that $26 dollar store haul you mentioned in one of the live-under-n-dollars threads?
I'm still hoping you'll post the results of that experiment. :)
Even if it wasn't as successful as you hoped, it would still be very helpful for novices.
It would make for an excellent dedicated (new) thread, and I'd participate. :)

At Orange's urging, I did a detailed analysis of one week of (recent) eating, and it came to $2.56/day (i.e. $35.84 for your target of two weeks).
That included zero SPAM, but about one "cup-o-noodles" per day, largely because it's easy to make (works with room temp water, no clean up in the field, just wash the foam cups before recycling).

Kaylee, I've lost the register tape and don't remember everything. There were 2 large ramen type soups, two boxed chow meins, two boxed mac and cheese, 3 tuna, 2 doz eggs, 2 bread, hot dogs, lemonade mix, pancake mix, 2 pouches dried mashed potatoes, and yes, the Spam knockoff. It was the only thing that cost more than $1, I think it was $2 something. However, didn't mean to mislead. To supplement I did have on hand at home potatoes, fresh and canned vegetables, milk, butter, juice and that all important 7th food group, a bag of mini chocolate bars.
Re my recipe search, I don't understand "sounds shiny."
B and C, thanks for your post. I don't know why I never think to search google for stuff I'm looking for. I always find it if I remember to do so!

Shoulder, Pork And Ham is what the letters meant.
Not Something Posing As Meat?  (Is this where I admit that SPAM and beans and corn was one of our first "grown up and away from home meals"?)
