At some times and in some places rodents get into our nomad vehicles and chew up wires and hoses. And make the place stink. People try various things with varying degrees of success.

Meanwhile, Germany (and I assume neighboring countries) have a major problem with Marders (martins). $65 million in automotive damage each year. Here's a link to an article about it. Maybe some of their preventive measures would work for you — although they don't work all that well for them.

I stayed at a friend's Southern California ranch a few years ago, and was curious when I saw that all the parked vehicles on the ranch had their hoods up.  There was not a single vehicle without its hood completely open. I inquired about this and was told it was because of rodents!!  Apparently keeping the hood UP prevents rodents from staying IN the engine compartment and doing damage!

I had a most bizarre encounter with some type of rodent -- never figured out what type-- in public lands in Nevada not far from Cedarville, CA.  I parked my truck and got inside to spend the night there.  About an hour later I heard what sounded like a whole gang of little mice or rats running all over my engine and on the vehicle underneath!  I went out and made a lot of noise and tried to chase them off. Quiet for a while, then in a few minutes, it started all over, they were raising a ruckus inside my engine.

Well I tried 3 times to get rid of them to no avail. I actually never even saw them! have no idea what they were. But there were a LOT of them!

Anyhow the only solution I could figure out was to get in the truck and DRIVE OFF and find a whole other place to camp down the road!!

Our home base is in Texas. And yes mice are industrious little critters. But I have more damage done by squirrels. We had a rattling noise and stink we could not figure out. Took the air filter out and found about 300 or more acorns stashed. Took weeks to get rid of smell.
