This is neat!
I remember the Swiss military used some type of diesel heater in their troop carriers (pinzgauer) I do not think it was this fancy though.

the company I work for just installed diesel heaters in their trucks about a month ago. I like it, they seem to work very well and can cook you right out of the vehicle on high. The fan on these heaters runs off a deep cycle battery which is charged when the truck is running.

I plan on getting one, they work really well, but you just have to remember that just like oil burners for a house they need more maintenance than propane appliances.

Over here, diesel costs almost twice as much as propane and an old style propane furnace can be picked up at the wreckers for $75. It only costs me about $45/month for propane, during the coldest winter months (and this includes cooking) and I'm up in Canada, so the savings in fuel would have to be rather significant in order for said system to pay for itself. 'Course, that's just my situation, but that of others might be similar. ..Willy.

I could question safer, but not cleaner than propane, diesel smells, a mess to refuel, Big $$$ for the setup.

This is also in my long term plans. I like the concept of having only one type of fuel to stock up on, instead of diesel, propane, white gas/unleaded for various tasks.

One of the bigger benefits that some of the units have an option to tap into your engine cooling, to pre-heat the engine, oil, and coolant in cold weather. This is especially a benefit if you boondock, since there aren't many outlets in the wilderness to plug in your block heaters overnight.

I've read stories of people draining the oil into a bucket kept near the fire, or even putting hot coals under the engine bay to help start on cold mornings.

wow adi that's hard core keeping oil warm at night by a fire. lost bone when I saw that screen name I thought my dog signed up. highdesertranger
