<br /><br />I can attest to the fact that they are not "pet haters". The organizer has two big and goofy pups whom I give noogies to every time I come and visit. A lot of people have dogs there, but some are a bit more protective of their owners (in a crowd) than is reasonable. Hence the no pet rule. Other than that you'll find that your pet is Welcome nearly everywhere in Slab City.<br /><br />

Interesting observation.&nbsp; I wondered when I was considering, as I sometimes do, whether there were dogs roaming around loose and I assumed there probably are.&nbsp; Specifically cat-killer dogs.<br /><br />The pics of the place don't show any trees a cat could climb to avoid being shredded by dogs with cat-killing inclinations.&nbsp; And I've found over the years that dog owners resent having their dogs killed no matter what they might be doing at the time of their demise.<br /><br />I guess I'll chalk Slab City off my list of potential places to visit.

Yeah, I understand the reasoning behind the dogs. Still unfortunate, cause I'd like to attend sometime when I'm there. Maybe in a couple years. Fortunately we have the RTR women's group to look forward to!

Not sure there would be trees at the RTR either. I've never known a problem between dogs and cats at any of our encampments. Are there many cats at the RTR?

I know of at least a couple people that brought their cats to the RTR. You don't see them out and around though and would never know they were there.

<br /><br />The place is fascinating enough to cause a person to want a looksee and judging from some of the emails I've gotten from people who go there yearly I think I'd like to do the place a visit sometime.&nbsp; Maybe if the cats get themselves offed by owls, bobcats or coyotes somewhere sometime I'll manage it afterward.&nbsp; The felines have a long history here and elsewhere of dodging the wildish animalcules whereas the friendly cat-killer pup I might have scratched behind the ears and told he was a good boy could put them off their guard, maybe.

<br /><br />Even with the cats, if need be. It's well worth it at least once.<br /><br />My first visit was last winter and I absolutely loved it. I don't recommend going or even staying there at anytime during the summer though. If you're unsure of where to stay, the <a href="http://lonersonwheels.com/">LoW's camp</a> is a good starting point since they have a chapter there. You're not obligated to join them since slab city is free.<br /><br />

<br /><br />So disappointing that one would make that judgement without actually knowing the details.<br /><br />I'm the one hosting the first party. &nbsp;I am the organizer. &nbsp;I live in Slab City FULL TIME (Summer's included) so I understand the dynamics of this place very well. &nbsp;I have two dogs that will be locked in my rig during the party. I have many friends here that have dogs, usually more than one and some have 5-7 dogs. (not made up, this is the reality).&nbsp;<br /><br />Imagine 30 women, and about 18 dogs, off-leash running around the room. &nbsp;The room is built with telephone poles. &nbsp;It is our LIVINGROOM even though it is outdoors. &nbsp;Sorry, but I really don't think having 18 dogs pee on the posts of our livingroom is considerate.<br /><br />Now add this observation. &nbsp;I went to an outdoor birthday party a couple weeks ago. Peeps brought their dogs. &nbsp;These were slab dogs and most of them know each other, but there is always an altercation. So now we are dealing with breaking up dog fights. &nbsp;<br /><br />This women's group is being started as support and comraderie for all of us. &nbsp;That would include no name calling ("dog-haters") and showing respect for the graciousness of someone offering their camp for a meeting. &nbsp;If once you get here and would like to offer YOUR camp for a meeting including dogs, that is wonderful. &nbsp;You can do that.

<br /><br />It's a desert. &nbsp;There are few trees. &nbsp;There are people out here that own cats. &nbsp;Yes, there are dogs roaming without leashes (although the dog catchers DO sometimes come out and pick up unleashed dogs).<br /><br />I have never heard of a "Slab Dog" killing a cat. &nbsp;But they sometimes do like to chase the cats if they cross paths. &nbsp;Cats usually hide under rigs and such if that happens. &nbsp;<br /><br />I know of a lady that puts her cats on leashes and takes them out everyday for a "walk". &nbsp;She even ties them up outside. &nbsp;So if you come, you could try to find a spot where the owners leash their dogs. &nbsp;Or have no dogs.<br /><br />The BIG problem out here are the coyotes. &nbsp;They DO eat cats if left outside in the evenings. &nbsp;Hopefully your cat is trained to come back before dusk.
