There are often groups from Quartzsite that travel together down there. DO NOT CAMP THERE ALONE IF YOU ARE FEMALE.
Different strokes for different folks. I met a lady who for over 20 years had spent fall-winter-spring there.

Of course she had a 100-lb. German Shepherd that lived right outside her RV and she slept with a 75-lb. pitbull and a .357 every night.

Imagine, thousands of people in RVs and trailers that never move all gathered in one area. They have water trucked in. What do you think they do with their black tanks?

Some dig trenches or holes. Others just dump somewhere a little bit aways from their trailer. It all dries up getting baked by the sun and then gets blown around with the rest of the dust. Gross

Then there is all the nefarious activity. Look at some of the Facebook groups for slab residents. It's the same thing over and over. Desperate people begging for money/food/water. People complaining about something violent/creepy done to them by another resident. People getting everything they own torched. People getting arrested. Newbies getting taken advantage of. People dying. Pets going missing. On and on.

The patriarch of a well known slab family, a man (I use that word loosely) named Spyder, was recently ousted as being a *********. He was leader of the ponderosa before he fled, a place suggested to many newcomers as being a safe place to stay.

If you don't do hard drugs I don't know what the slabs possibly has to offer you.

Got any newspaper articles to link to? Just because this is the internet:D

Also... composting toilets.

Haven't been able to find any, not sure if charges have been filed or anything yet. It was pretty big news in the slab community not too long ago

Here's the bottom line:

If it sounds like a place you would enjoy, go there. If it goes bad, too bad, so sad. If you live, you might learn. Fine.

If it sounds like an active sewer, don't go there. When you hear bad things about the place, be relieved that you made the right decision, and decide what you're going to have for dinner.

IMHO there are a lot of really cool people there, it is an interesting and often fun place. It also has a lot of really bad people there that are bad news strung out on heroin and meth. You piss off the wrong person there and they will burn your rig to the ground, or worse...
Heroin, meth, thieves, arsonists and possible rapists?! WTF, man? Geez, everything you said (in red above) makes that place sound like hell. Why go there when there are so many beautiful quiet and safe places to hang out in the US?
.
re -- why go to the Slabs?
.
To strengthen my immune system?

Could be a good time to stack out a claim if they decide to mine lithium around there. One of two big deposits I read about was near there
I'll let some greedy corporation handle that, because they will. I just want to wander and go fishin'.

^^^ not a bad idea! Maybe tow a boat and a tent to live out of. Don’t come to Lake Powell, you will never leave! Lol!!!

Just head down to the Salton Sea and you don't even need to catch fish.

There are plenty just lying around already...:)
