Yeah, I know, a 454 will drink gas like water, probably, but man would it pull!
shoot, if it was a 350, I'd be on the way with cash in hand

It would certainly handle your trailer.

wouldn't touch that with someone else's money. it's been lowered. highdesertranger

Sure the springs aren't just worn out? It's not a 4x4

Lots of pics of the inside, wonder what the rest of the body looks like. Also whats on the roof? You could fit a few big panels on it. lol

worth a look see,a 350 would bolt right in,maybe have to change exhaust, looks stock ride height to me

I think i will at least contact the seller, no computer BS to deal with, and looking at pics online, I'm not so sure it's been lowered
interior looks in good shape, too

:)  If I could have found anything in decent shape that would tow larger loads and was pre 1979 I'd a bought if if I could have afforded it.  My 1981 1 ton dually had a 454 4sp stick and ran good and pulled anything I'd let be loaded on my 40 ft. flatbed.

Then someone sugared my gas tank and even with 2 rebuilds it never ran right again.  That was the  2nd time my rig was sabatoged while leased to the same company.    I'm 99% sure who instigated the sabatoge but couldn't prove it. Others could have lost their jobs if they stepped forward to assit me.  I just pulled my lease, signs and plates and moved on.  I had forgotten what caused the engine to seize until it came to me while reading this post.

I hope it's a good rig and you get it if you want it. Geez it was only 33ys ago I can't believe I'd forgotten!  A mind is a terrible thing to lose......way worse than having a screw loose or misplacing some marbles...oh yeah IMHO

That truck is way cool..
I would have trouble not buying it just to have if it were near.

Seems to be a lot of them on KSL.com in Salt Lake City Utah. Favorite vehicle of the Morman moffia.

I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt when they said it runs good, but when they said it was good on gas, all bets are off!
That, and being lowered, I'm with HDR on that.
Having said that, I like 454's. I had one in my old MH.

Well, I messaged him some yesterday, ended asking him what would be a good time to come see it today, no response, and today the price has dropped to $1000, that's ort of suspicious, why didn't he give me a time to come today if he's that desperate to sell?
I really don't want to drive to Rockport just to play footsie with another shady deal like that one in Conroe
Meantime, a friend has spotted an 88 GMC 2500 Vandura conversion van in Halletsville, with a 350
Tarilers.com says with the right ring gear, that'll pull 7500, and my friend says the van looks really good inside
The van really sounds like the better alternative, although I still don't think the Sub has been lowered

Art, I think you're right on it not being lowered. I think it's just a saggy old 1/2 ton. Which brings up the point that I don't think a 454 was ever a factory option on the 1/2 ton Burb. The only 1/2 ton Chevy I remember with a 454 was the SS truck. Probably not a big deal if the conversion was done right using factory parts - they were offered in 3/4 tons so it would be a straight swap. But I bet you'll be replacing the rear end soon if you tow much with it. It looks like it still has 5 lug 15'' wheels so it most likely only has a 12 bolt nonfloater vs the 14 bolt used in the 3/4 tons with that motor. And the 15'' tires might be a little light for the load also.

iif you can just fix up a van as your travel rig you could leave the tt at home

The cancer on that thing is epic.  Look over the doors.  :(

Those were bad years for rusting out.

Lotta questions on that vehicle. Wiki says that generation Burb' had a 454 option:

"Suburbans for model year 1973[27] now had two doors on each side (the previous generation had just one door on the driver's side), front-and-rear air conditioning, a baggage rack, a heater under the third seat and step-plates for easier access.[28] A new Eaton Automatic Differential Lock was introduced as an option extra for the rear differential.

The base engine was the small-block 305-cubic-inch V8. A 350-cubic-inch V8 and a 400-cubic-inch V8 were optional. The 454-cubic-inch big-block V8 was now available for the first time." End of quote

My 77 1 ton had the 400. It had rusted all fenders, doors and quarters. Replacement fenders were like $75 ea, replacement doors from a junkyard that were ok cost 100 ea complete, quarters had to be sectioned. Ugh.

No on the 'burb, it was getting too sketchy, and a friend of mine spotted a 3/4 ton conversion van: I bought that instead
It will pull my TT if I needed, or as Gary noted, I can leave the TT home, or sell it once it's paid off

I bought a new '76 Chevy Silverado & chose the 350 over the 454 because of economy concerns & towing, it never got but 10 mpg, just like the 454. My next truck had the 454, same 10 mpg but it never even knew what a steep grade was.
