has anybody removed the passenger seat in their van? I just really feel it is a waste of space, although my co~pilot might disagree...

Have you considered turning it around to face the rear? I learned that from Katie and Heidi and I love it...in fact I use wingnuts for the four studs that hold mine on the pedestal and can fairly quickly turn it back around for a human passenger if I will be driving with someone there a lot...
For my dog sidekick she loves it turned around and if we should get in an accident from the front of the van, she would be much safer...it is my recliner/easy chair in camp and is her bed at night...
bri
Bri (and those who have turned their front passenger seats around to face backwards),

I am seriously considering this. However, when I sit in the driver's seat and look across, it appears the passenger seat back would block the view of the right side mirror. Does it?

Hey Ann, I think he talked about having it swivel, Me, I want to use the door as my main entry, and block the side doors... so I would have the rear doors, and the front door, to me a small space does not need 6 doors. I would think of replacing it with a smaller marine chair set back about a foot, still giving me about 2foot clearance for it as an entry way.

Hi Ann, Mine does not swivel. I have to actually unbolt it to turn it back to the front...I rarely do that tho. I don't have any trouble seeing out the mirror but have to say something to the dog and she moves her head when it is in the way....I keep the seat pushed back on it's slides and tilted back (all this meaning toward the front of the vehicle).

It is up to you but I really like it turned backwards...it is common for vandwellers to do that. Maybe Katie will chime in on this....
Bri

Nice set up, Bri...

I can see how removing the front seat and then using the passenger side front door to get in and out would give you about three more feet of storage / living space. That would be something worth thinking about.

This is such a creative group...

Bodhi
Man, that really looks cozy/comfy, Bri!
Wish I had a van. (Again)

I turned the seats for Cheri and Katie at the winter RTR and they both loved it. Being full size vans, I was able to manipulate the mounting so the seats faced at an angle toward the center of the rear living area as opposed facing straight down the side.

Cheri's seat could then be moved forward on it's track (moving it toward the rear of the van) thus moving out of her line of sight of her window and mirror. Katie's seat back actually folded to accomplish the same thing.

Both ladies thought they now had "easy chairs" in their living rooms.

I'm considering removing the passenger seat in Shaggy as well. It would be much easier to get assisting devices in ans out that way.

I can see the value and comfort in having a chair, there is just something about it, in my mind I am always thinking of getting the most of my space, and I do miss having a chair though but don't want to give up that much space for one, have 3 dogs and I need to sacrifice somewhere.

Interesting idea about the wing nuts, Bri. I get so frustrated trying to get in under there with my deep socket wrench. Gonna try that.

I have to remember to "un-recline" my passenger seat and make it straight up before driving to give me clear view.

Brother Squire, dont suppose you have the head to do that with ford seats?? wanna remove mine in the box truck

The Ford van/truck seat and seat belts are installed using a TP55 Torx PLUS, which is a new modification (improvement) over the regular Torx.

Thank you for turning my seat around. That probably made more difference in the comfort and livability than any thing else I have done in here. I have a small cooler that I use for storage that is just perfect to use as a foot stool and I can lean my seat back and stretch out my legs just like a recliner. I love it!!!!! I seldom have a passenger and they just have to sit backwards or on my bed. If I was taking someone very far I would have to turn it around because of the seat belt but it just hasn't been an issue so far. Tony rides on the bed most of the time so he doesn't care.
I would never block my side doors because I LOVE sitting next to the door when it is open and looking outside. Right now I have the side door and the back door open and a warm breeze is flowing through the van. I am parked on Dome rock at Quartzsite and it is beautiful. At night I sit here with the door open and I can see the stars and the lights of Quartzsite and the lights of the vehicles on the freeway down below me. Life is very very good.
HUGS to all, Cheri and Tony

Hi Cheri...I am totally into it too. I love to sit in the turned around seat in a walmart or truckstop esp. if it is raining and I want to get online, etc.

I also like the side door open and I sit in the doorway...feet on the ground and watch the world. I also lie in bed with the side door open and at times sleep with it open and look out at nature...

If I were to for some reason, remove the passenger seat, I think I would build a cabinet there for storage and to use as a desk....but where would Dina ride???? Nah, screw it...it stays...
bri

how hard would it be to find one? place like Pep Boys have it perhaps? or would I need to go to a tool place?

Once you get them out just replace them with regular hex bolts at the hardware store. No need for the tool then.
