You can't carry in DC, but if you scroll down you'll see you can have it in your vehicle if it can be locked away so it is not accessible to you as you are driving. If it can't be locked away, it can be carried in a lock box. A lock box is one of the 3 things you must buy to make it legal to have in your vehicle in all 50 states. Here is a quote directly from that page:

§ 22-4504.02. Lawful transportation of firearms.

(a) Any person who is not otherwise prohibited by the law from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm
shall be permitted to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully
possess and carry the firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry the firearm if the
firearm is transported in accordance with this section.

(b)(1) If the transportation of the firearm is by a vehicle, the firearm shall be unloaded, and neither the
firearm nor any ammunition being transported shall be readily accessible or directly accessible from the
passenger compartment of the transporting vehicle.
(2) If the transporting vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the driver's compartment, the
firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console,
and the firearm shall be unloaded.

If you read that carefully, you can drive through DC with your unloaded .357 in a lock box as long as it isn't in the glove box.

Bob I assumed both (a) and (b) had to be met to be legal
"...shall be permitted to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry the firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry the firearm if the firearm is transported in accordance with this section."
according to this article it apears to just be poorly written and open to interpretation

sounds good to me, I would make sure to get the phone number of a gun rights lawyer in the area just in case there's any problems.

I was trying to read that and it's pretty horrific. Seems to be so many variables and iffy's that seems to suggest that a cop and a judge, if anti-gun, can really interpret such gun transportation laws many different ways. I stopped reading because it gave me a big headache and will read it again later.

Even in many states where gun ownership is legal, but CCW's are not (or close to impossible to obtain), you cannot keep an unloaded gun, locked up in your vehicle unless you're going to the range, gunsmith, hunting, gunshop, etc.

And cops will usually always ask if you have weapons in routine traffic stops. So the question becomes even more iffy if you're just passing through on the highway only or passing through and stopping to see the sights and grab food.

You do not have to answer any questions on a "routine" stop. Require a search warrant for them to enter your vehicle, which is your home.

True, but also rolling the dice that the cop is not a bad cop who will plant stuff. This is why I want to make sure that the rifle will be legal rather than chance it being illegal and play the legal games with cops, on the side of the road; alone, with no witnesses.

Like if I were transporting 100 lbs of cocaine, then yea, I would not admit to such and roll this dice as that's my best bet. But here, I'm not looking do anything illegal, not even risking it. And I'm not chancing that the courts would accept a conversion van as my rolling, legal residence. I'm almost certain that this will not fly.

They still need a warrant or permission to search the vehicle, but I think places of residence and business have more rights. Like in my State, I can have all the AK-47's and ammo that I want in my house, but carry one inside my van around 24/7 because I declared it being inside a moving resident? Jail time.
