Rob, for live fire you would need to go up in the hills and even then it might be hard to find a spot. in the area that RTR is at it's pretty flat and wide open. I feel safety and handling lessons would be a great thing. a lot of people were never given any type of instruction on weapon handling. highdesertranger

If you do, please plan to cover winches.

I'm actually going to focus on self-recovery w/o a winch. Most people at this gathering won't have one, in fact I don't.
Winching techniques is a course of its own and I wouldn't be qualified to teach that. ;-)

I'd be interested in the combat and evasion course
I can see live fire being a real problem uness we find a place with a good solid berm for a backstop

I've become very aware of how wide open I am to liability claims and other issues. We're getting big enough it's no longer just a gathering of friends.

We are not going to go off-topic and talk about liability laws. I'll delete any posts on that topic unless you have passed the bar in Arizona, then you can comment on it.

I'm open to the idea, but I'd need to call the BM office first and get it okayed and whoever leads a class about guns would have to be a NRA Instructor Certified.

I got my CCW there in Quartzsite from a retired LEO. I'm going to approach him to see if he would be open to doing a video on the topic and speak at the RTR. We'll see.

I am not sure what the rules are there or if there is room, I was considering bringing a few weapons, 2 pistols and a shotgun, and give some basic instruction. I also have a rifle I use to compete with in 338 Lapua caliber but I'm not sure we could get a clear field of fire for it.

Pistols are a Glock 27, a baby Glock .40 cal and an FN 5 7. Shotgun is a Benelli M4 in 12 gauge, semi auto.

I have plenty of ammo for all of them, target loads for the shotgun.

Maybe Bob or one of the folks 'in the know' can tell me if it is feasible or even wanted.

Combat course and evasion training would be in slow motion, my old body is a walking target.

Rob
I read Bob's comment that he would need to get an NRA certified person to teach the weapons course. IF you get the OK to do combat and evasion I'm interested. Slow mo is my MO, so that works for me.

I am not NRA Certified or even a member, they and I disagree on many issues. My training is from Marine Security Guard training while being assigned to various Embassies.

My close combat and evasive skills came from years of competition, still no NRA.

I withdraw my offer, too many hoops to jump thru. Rob

I will post a bit of advice, take it as you wish, Rob

The best advice on winches I can think of is if you are going somewhere that you might need one...DON'T   You are in pretty deep if you need a winch. In 35 years of bombing around on the back roads and trails I have only needed a winch twice, both times I had no business taking that trail and I knew it too.

Bob, you probably already know this but I will not be at RTR this year.  I have been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be having surgery for it.  If all goes well I might get there for the last couple of days but I am not planning on teaching a wire jewelry class.  Cheri
Hi, Cheri, I know firsthand how scary this can be, but the surgery was remarkably easy for me.  I had a mastectomy and felt pretty good after a couple of days.  Hope you can make it to RTR!  I have found the desert to be very healing.  Good luck.  May you be well.  Tracy

Many of us who regularly attend the RTR are grateful that you are withdrawing your offer. We see no value in this for the average full-time van dweller. Speaking for many of my friends, we are not interested in camping where there is the sound of gunfire to disturb the peace and tranquility. Had this moved forward we would not be attending.

JMHO,  Vandwellers do not need to gain a reputation as weapon sources.  You may chose to carry, which is your right.  Just do not flaunt it in public please.  The last thing we need if for every LEO thinking we are all armed and dangerous.  Those that are interested can PM each other, and arrange something.  There are enough members here that might be willing to share skills in that regard.

How I protect my personal space is my business.

If I was going this year, I would share my skills in 12 volt power systems.   I am well versed in that subject.   :D  And I do not mind sharing the information.

I wanted to clarify my post further.....
I have been a member of the NRA since the early 1980s. I vote for candidates that support the Second Amendment. I urge anyone who is seeking serious training to contact the NRA. You can attend training classes for free with instructors are competent and fully trained and certified.
My friends and I are seeking to learn new ideas that will enhance our full-time van dwelling experience.
For the majority of us this will be our fourth fifth and even sixth RTR.

I'd be glad to do a talk on solar cooking now that I know I'm coming. I have the two ovens and a lot of different cookware to show off but showing them in use will be condition dependent. Even better may be having others that use them talk too as there are different ovens/cookers and cookware as well as ways to use them. A solar cook off might be fun but again condition dependent.

GotSmart:. Too bad. I'd be very interested in listening to that.

jimindenver: Sign me up for that one!

I almost feel as if I have to defend myself and I don't appreciate it. The point is MOOT since I withdrew my offer. I was not trying to sell anything, merely pass on some hints on proper use. How anyone protects themselves, their space or anything else is of absolutely no concern of mine. Period.

Now please, I am asking nice, drop it.

I would be very interested in a talk on solar cooking. I think a solar cook off would be fun.

Even if there isn't time or someone can't make the talk, you will find the ovens out any time it is sunny so come a knockin. I use them and the hotplate powered by the solar to do almost all of my cooking. Sometimes there will just be a pot of water in one ready for coffee, tea, dishes or washing up.

The problem is The RTR is 2 days shorter and I have classes scheduled at every opportunity. I have a 2:00 class scheduled on pressure cooking, I think it would go well if you shared the time with her on solar cooking. Would you be interested in that, maybe 30 minutes each? But it depends on the audience, it could be longer.
