Thanks for the input.  Unfortunately, there's not any room left other than the current configuration, so I will have to settle for the compromise.  Otherwise, I would have gotten the largest King Kong size panels possible.

Size of the panel isn't the issue. This will happen with any size solar panel. All panels are comprised of a number of photo voltaic cells connected in series. Shading, or partially shading just one of these, reduces the panels output considerably.
