question about the barking collar

I've used citronella collars for my dogs. They work, but the dogs have learned how loud the whine/bark needs to be in order for the collar to spray. Unfortunately they still can get away with a low whine, so it might not work if you need your dog to be completely quiet. But from my research of bark collars they seem to be the most humane way to go. The citronella is not harmful to them, but it does tend to stink up an enclosed space (vehicle) quickly.

Hobohounds.
Thank you for your input. I don't mind the low jibber jabbering she will do. I just want more control over the yipping and yapping. She is so fast and runs to the door before I can get my hand on her lead to stop and correct her. So she is off and running like a nut ball. It doesn't last long, but it's enough that it would make me nervous and irritate other campers. Plus she shouldn't be in control of my door.

I am trying to learn how to be the alpha in our two some pack. ha ha. Fat chance of me being the boss.

I am not concerned about being stealth. I will be doing camp sites and BLM sites. No street sleeping in my car or worrying about the po po. This is my second childhood and I'm going camping and living with nature.

Hope to see you on the highways and campsites.

kidiekat

I guess if you're camping legally, then it's fine if the dog barks....especially if you're in isolated areas in the woods. Great early warning system.

But stealth camping in the streets, you'd need to control the barking. Being traumatized isn't fun for anyone, but if it's a must then so be it. Just set it on the lowest setting first to see how that goes. Dogs will learn from such trauma.

Id like to see a youtube of someone (besides the company) trying it, like this example here of a different one.

I think there might be some, if my internet would stop being a jerk :\ Ehh...i thought i found one but it just showed a dog barking. The amazon reviews seem to have extremes...people who it didn't work for at all and those that loved it, but far and away there are much more 1 star reviews..

I would never want a device like that ultimate bark control that will punish your dog when another dog barks. If possible I always try to stick to the more serious companies like Dogtra, tritronic, and, sportdog. I have never used a bark collar but I would look for one that has shock settings, you set it just high enough that it gives slight discomfort, if used properly it should be quite humane compared to choke collars etc.

Here is where I would definitely use amazon for there reviews to get a feel for the product.

I have never used citronella but I would think the smell would last to long. If dogs don't like the smell and the smell lingers they might forget what triggered the stench, all they know is that they smell awful and are not happy. A shock collar zaps instantly and then the pain is gone instantly, no lingering. No delayed punishment.

Hi bee The collars are confusing for sure. I don't want my dog to get shocked because another dog is barking. Choke collars scare me. If used improperly they can damage the throat cartilage.
Luci did well today. The trash man came and she was at the window as usual but I just kept reminding her to be quite. Then reasurring her that she was a good girl. She did some low grumbles but for the first time we didn't go through the crazies. Of course I was waiting for the event and coaching her so round one for the alpha human. We did that without treats too.... I am working hard with her so may be by the time I am ready to buy or not to buy she will be listening to me. Yay wouldn't that be nice.
I did go to some of the sites you mentioned.
Thanks.

My bro has had success training his dog with these videos
http://www.youtube.com/profile?anno...re=iv&src_vid=cmhGsDl0OWI&user=tab289

At least when he wasn't being too lazy He taught his german shepherd puppy how to sit, lay, leave it (i was very impressed with this..he leaft a fresh grilled hamburger alone 2 inches from his nose!), paw and how to wipe his feet

I think he has a couple videos on calming your dog down and maybe even barking.

DazarGadin thank you for the link. Wow lots of training video's. Luci is gona learn some new tricks.

As with anything in life there really is no magic solution other than solving the problem the "hard way" by having to actually train your dog. In my experience with dog behavior issues there is no easy way out. If it's easy then it's not worth doing!

HoboHounds. You are correct. I just thought of Luci as not being smart enough to learn more than what I have taught her. Turns out she is smarter than me and was the alpha in our pack. lol

She is improving each day and we are about to change which one of us is in charge. She now sits and waits when I put her food bowl down until I tell her okay to eat. Sit, stay, is way better. I have her training treats close by and am doing reinforcement for calm time and for when she does good doggie stuff.

We did a short walk today. I can only go so far before my leg goes numb but she knows heel and not to pull on the leash. When there are no cars on the road I let her wander ahead a bit, but when I see a car (which is rare on this back road) She does heel again and will do it on a loose leash.

There are lots of trucks and men working at the end of the road on the electrical relay station. She did not bark or even pay attention to any of it. So that's a good sign.

I did read about the training collars again. I am hoping I can get through this without one now.

We have time so I am giving it a good try.

Patience is the key! It's so hard not to get frustrated and give up, which confuses the dog and puts you back to square one. They need structure and leadership just like kids do. But it sounds like you're off to a good start! Good luck!

blueberry thank you for the links. I didn't think to go to u tube for training luci. duh There is so much there I can use. I like this lady she has lots of good training tips and lots of things I would like to teach luci.

HoboHounds. Correct again. I think that we have good motivation now. No, I have good motivation to stay the plan and that way I can keep her with me.

I do appreciate all the input. I did notice today while I was doing the riding mower thing. That luci does follow my hand signals while I am on the mower. I keep her on a long self reel in line and she runs around and follows me on it. I use the signals for her to move left or right so I won't ride over her line. She gets to run almost all the way around the shed and then back to meet me on the other side.

This is her best exercise since I can't take her on runs. Tonight she is worn out.

Thank you again

Bindi (a min pin) barked a lot during the beginning when we would leave our rig. She has learned on her own that she needs not bark at every vehicle or sound. If someone walks too close she will sound off, but stops when they move away.
It took her a little time to adjust to a few things about traveling, but we're seeing rapid improvements.

Dogs are pretty smart critters. They understand more than we sometimes give them credit for. I think you are doing the right thing by working closely with your little gal. I'd bet she will be an excellent travel buddy.
