I think sometimes it comes down to who lives in the neighborhood. If there's just one jerk in the neighborhood you're going to have a problem. I work in healthcare so I'm dressed in scrubs all the time. I wait in between clients and was accosted by a jerk about being parked and he even inferred I could be a thief casing the neighborhood. Right at that point I told him to go take a jump off a cliff. I parked there again and he called the cops at which point I told the cop he was a nut job who actually believed a thief would be casing him in scrubs. The cop laughed and said I could park no problem.

Yet in another neighborhood I know they accepted a homeless man who camped in the nearby woods using branches and tarps. In fact they even invited him in at times to have supper with them. There are some great people out there!

I had to put up with a lot of negativity when I had a cargo van. Everyone's attitudes seemed to totally change when I switched to window vans.

I think it's not knowing who it was that was spooky. That, stories about kidnapped and missing children on the news, and the fact that people hardly know their neighbors, anymore.

I agree. I will most likely have some adjustments to make once I get on the road in my Cube. I'm not sure how friendly folks are knowing your "in transit".

I didn't stay in residential areas so something like this could never happen to me. If you have a cargo van you will be very stealthy in the business areas or industrial areas. A window van is more limited but it can still be in front of any 24 retail business.

George Carlin once said, "We all know how dumb the average American is, now realize that 50% are dumber than that."

Couple that with being brainwashed by the media that anyone strange in your neighborhood must be reported to the authorities, specially if they are in a van.

Common sense and independent thinking are a vestige of our past.
