Saving approx $6000/yr for the next 2 years and will probably buy a 2 year old nissan nv2500 high top. I currently pay 30% of income to hud which is not a lot ($312). Planning on moving to senior citizen HUD in ST George when I get to the top of the list. I have considered living out of my honda civic, but it is hard to justify when paying $312 a month for rent. I am open to opinions, thoughts or any kind. I am new to this and have mostly been watching Bob's videos.

Thanks,

Good to be here!

Welcome! Everyone's "comfort" level is different and can change as time goes on. It is suggested, what are your must-haves in deciding. More freedom/less size or more comfort/larger size. Relatively stealth/fitting in or definite view of you are traveling/camping/rv'ing.

What your plans while out there? Roaming the country or fairly grounded in a region?

Welcome aboard !
Saving $500 a month!
Wish I could do that.........

Welcome jclay.
$312 / Month is low rent. If considering the nomad life you will have to stay put in campsites to offset gas costs.
My biggest problem is that I like to drive and explore. Gas costs can easily exceed $400/month if you are not careful.
Check out some remote sites in your area and set up camp and try to stay as long as possible to compare costs.
Food / Water prep for a long stay are essential.
Hope this helps.
P.S. without Bob's videos on preparation I would have stumbled a bit.

In the last 20 months I've never even come close to paying $312 a month for campsites. Even when travelling across the continent for a month it never cost me that much.

I cringed when I had to pay $26 +/- Cdn for one night in a campsite with full hookups but then offset it with 3 nights for free somewhere else.

Even at the absolute worst of times I don't think I've spent anywhere near half that amount.

My budget for summer months is around $175. Cdn because there are far fewer free and a lot of really low cost sites. Gas to get to the more remote but free sites would far outweigh paying for the low cost ones.  For the winter months I usually average somewhere around NIL in Arizona and California.

Camping out of the Civic close to home is a great way to start. A less expensive cargo van would shorten your wait time. Do watch gas costs. When making longer trips do your town business enroute rather making special trips.
