As a super nervous driver, interstate driving (once you escape the gravity+construction of major cities) is actually less stressful than normal driving. Hit cruise control and you can often go a long time without touching the wheel, signals or breaks.

  Ummmmm my Ranger has cruise control except it's missing the auto pilot feature you mention above  :D

Without touching the wheel ! Now I'm scared.

" When I travel to Atlanta I take the back roads just to keep my sanity."

If you can manage that, you can manage any driving you're likely to encounter. The 2-lanes take longer, but I too find them a lot less stressful, and there are more interesting things to look at, too. How did you figure out your route into Atlanta? Maps or just knowing the roads from years of travel in the area? I'd suggest thinking about what you like on your roads and comparing the Atlanta maps to the knowledge in your head. Then look for a similar route around another large city and give it a trial run. There's no real need to drive on a type of road that makes you uncomfortable.

Thanks LouiseE for the support. Perhaps taking the road less traveled would be a joy to drive.  ;)

I'm 66 years old and tomorrow morning I will be driving my old Jeep truck towing an old VW at a top speed of 52 MPH out of Utah, across Arizona then south to Fort Mohave to see a fellow 82 years old that drove a city bus that was limited to 51MPH from Arizona to Alaska. He jokes he was much much younger before he left! I'll let you know how it goes for me but I tend to be in a world of my own when driving that old truck. I watch traffic and If I get two or three cars backed up behind me I pull off, but still I get a lot of people telling me I'm number one, doesn't bother me one bit as I listen to that almost 40 some year old truck go down the road, life is good!

Mine was a Dodge Sweptline .............

I was the speed limiter ..

There is no reason for a competent driver to fear the Interstate

Have you driven on the interstate in Atlanta?? Everyone has dents and is going 20mph over the speed limit. Just the idea puts me off it, and I am fearless on the road.  Really- any road but the freeway to downtown Atlanta. ~ crofter

[quote="DrJean" Wait!  You drive without touching the wheel?????

Reminds me... The self driving vehicles are said to have the driving experience equivalent to a 75 yr old, which explains why that turn signal has been on for 17 miles.

Is the shepherd older, 65+, in dog years?

HAHA! He was older, 70+ I think before he stopped getting any older. He was great at cruise control. When he wanted to go faster he would lean all his weight on my right thigh. He never wanted to go slower, and would whine below 45mph. ~ crofter

It's the fools that drive 90 that don't need to be on the road!

Good to find mature van dwellers...I am a few years away from full timing it, though.

Getting older by the day here.......

trying to get my ducks in a row... (you know how hard it is to herd ducks?)

looking for my tow vehicle and then a TT to match....

My co driver sleeps most of the time when on the road, but he pops up once in a while to make
sure Im doing ok...

hitting the road later this fall if everything falls into place

BTW, He turned 7 today June 22...
