I don't know your circumstances but you can do a lot of this work.  Replaced the oil and transmission pan gasket and the transmission screen last October at a campground outside of Winslow, Arizona.  That was easy.  Now I am back in Winslow and replaced all the brake pads and master cylinder in a abandoned restaurant parking lot across from the auto supply.  Took two days because I am old, but easy too.  I am grateful to have these skills and hope you have them too.  It saves a lot of money to do the work myself.
Great to hear u did these at campground and parking lot. U

I am on a big learning curve, humbling to ask ignorant questions but is the oil and transmission pan the same thing? Is it urgent to replace gaskets.if it is leaking antifrezze from a pan.

Thanks

Was at work had to post that before I finished. Wanted to say awesome u have the skills, I hope learn them to save money, like u said. Know what u mean on the older and slower :)

Is this transmission fluid, filter, gasket change something an inexperienced person could do? I did watch I utube vidieo on it. Think I have the tools. Do u need to lift it up? If so is there alternatives to buying the things u drive on to? No jacks for sure. Will make sure to use right fluid, sternwake:)

I now have a flashlight so I can get better pics on the oil leak, I'll do before and after cleaning it with the safe cleaner. Pics good way to document if it is getting worse.

Good day to all

Above pic...Can that be transmission fluid? Or only be oil?

If you were quoted $1,000 for the oil leak, it is a major engine pulling job to change a $2 gasket.  It is in a place you will not be able to get to.

Oil is to lubricate the engine, which has a pan on the bottom.

The transmission is behind the engine, and has a separate pan and it uses ATF.

Antifreeze is the coolant in the radiator, and that circulates through the engine to keep it from overheating.

Three separate systems, and the liquids should not mix.

Is antifreeze dripping from a pan?

Take a white cloth, and get some of the fluid on it.

Then compare it to what is on the transmission dip stick, and the oil dip stick.

Easy way to tell.

the pic you posted is the transmission pan. I don't see any leaks on it to worry about. however the transmission should be serviced at regular intervals. can you get a pic of the oil pan? that's the pan in front of the trans. btw from that pic it looks like your front right brake rotor is shot. highdesertranger

That makes sense on pulling the engine

I meant transmission fluid, not antifrezze. Yes the pan has a small leak of.antifrezze.

Yes will get a pic of the oil pan tomorrow.

Yes both rotors look that way. They are saying 480.00 have to be pulled apart. Next area to move to after transmission.

Yes I need to get the transmission serviced.
Thanks

I am confused, antifreeze leaking from the pan? I would say a expansion plug is leaking and it's running down the pan. got a pic? dang you have some rust too, judging from your rotor shield, how's the rest of the vehicle? also it looks like it hasn't been lubed in awhile. highdesertranger

It is a 2000, winter in Michigan. Not sure if u can see rust around wheels. When u asked about rust around rest of it didn't know if u meant under truck or body.

I will look up expansion plug and lubed tomorrow, my brain has worn out for today !

I was in the Walmart (Evil Empire) today and went to the tool aisle just to see what they had on offer. This Stanley set was a middle size at 145 pieces and price of $49.88. Looked like you could do quite a bit with it, would need to add some more combination wrenches as you found you needed and of course a big straight slot screwdriver and a hammer to mess up gasket surfaces with. I've never cared for those fitted plastic cases, can't add anything!

Guy

145 pieces for $50?

Guy, I don't men to be a downer, and I'm not trying to suggest that you need expensive, professional grade tools from Mac or Snap-On, but really cheap tools either break when you need them the most, or they round off the nut or bolt head so you can't take it apart even with a good tool later.  And it usually happens when you're in the middle of nowhere and will have a good, long walk to get back to civilization.

John

ok the trans leak looks about normal. it's more of a seep. the oil pan looks like it's been leaking up front. this could be the front oil pan seal or the harmonic balancer seal. did I miss how often you need to add oil? if it's like a quart every 5,000 miles I wouldn't worry about it. after all by looking at the rust I wouldn't put a lot of money into this truck. my 2 cents. on to the anti freeze leak. highdesertranger

John, I think that for most people these would be of value. For what it is worth it is a name brand with a warranty, 4.5 stars on Amazon. They would certainly be better than nothing. I'm just reporting what I saw today. You seem to have more experience with cheap tools than I do, what would you recommend for someone with no tools and $50 to spend?

Guy.

Stanley is a brand that used to be good. Now they are made in china.  They do have a lifetime warranty.  I would not get that set, as it has about 120 parts that would never be used.

Stanley is Mac.   Same company.

I'm afraid I'm not really in a position to advise, Guy.  I bought my tools many years ago and haven't had to shop for any in quite a while.  Back in the day, Proto, S&K, and Craftsman were all good, American-made brands and excellent buys for someone who didn't need the professional grade tools, Mac and Snap-On.

These days, many of these brands are being made in China and quality has gone down hill drastically.  The current made-in-China Craftsmen are crap compared to the old ones.

If I were in the market for tools today, I believe I'd be haunting estate sales and yard sales, looking for the old tools.

Truck has 70,000 miles got it six weeks ago for 2,000.00

Learned the consequence of 2 wheel drive and 2.2 engine, went from ford econoline, to this :)

When I bought it put 1/3 quart of oil in it. Has remained full.

For sure not putting much into this vehicle. Using it as practice to learn auto how to diagnosis, mainatance, fix small things, and know what I am talking about when going to mechanic.

When this one goes need to go back to van so I am not walking to back to sleep. Don't think I can afford the accord in window or worth putting money into.

Have a whole new respect for people who work on vehicles and much more willing to pay them for it, small spaces, need for tools, knowledge and experience, on ground, bent over, yeeks! Have totally experienced the humbling experience of ignorance.  Thank u all for sharing your knowledge and experience and having patience, much appreciated.

Realized I have been extremely blessed to have had vehicles that have run to lots of miles, 200,000, 180,00, 240,00 with almost no repair or mainatance except fluids. And brakes When I have learned and looked there are so many things and parts that can go wrong, miracle any of us make it down the road!

Wanted to change my oil to get comfortable but still intimidated. Took it to oil change place this am. Woman manager, told her I was learning her and the guy spent a lot of time explaining things looking it over. She was even encouraging me to be hired by her. That was affirming. Confidence is holding me back from trying.

They Looked it up on car fax has had regular mainatance

This is what they wrote.

Transmission pan leaks puts oil pan front seal
Leaking prior to service fuel filter looks
New pets 3/1016
Shifting kind of hard puts recommended new plugs and wires
If trains slips or shifts hard recommended lucus( said I was worried it was slipping but talking to another mechanic, think it was that I was used to ford econoline 150 and suburb with v6 I think it is called)
Replaced rear diff check plug previous one
Rounded out puts rear differ fluid bad parts recommended

Hope day is good for all

First line of what they said should have read...parts instead of puts

New parts instead of pets
