I was just reading through the thread again. I really, really appreciate the range and diversity of solutions. I need the ideal and the what I could do depending on time place circumstance. Money is always an issue.
I am going to start with doing an oil change next couple of days, as I know nothing about mechanics. Going to go see about loan a tool program. Then read your thread about essential tools,.start thrift shopping. Thanks again!

Do you have someone that can explain the difference between a quality tool, and junk?

80% of the tools I see I would not buy.

Worse comes to worse, go to a couple pawn shops and ask about tool quality.  They have plenty of both.

This is my favorite socket set.  Craftsman Pass Through.

Gotsmart, I am sitting in advanced auto parts parking lot, taking a break and thought I would read on here a bit, and there is your pic:) and question. They were just showing me the junk sets versus the ones like u showed. Pawn shops are a good idea and garage sales they suggested, maybe Craigslist. I am not really one to ask live people for help much, I am going from books and u all. My young neighbors offer help they work on cars all the time. I could.consult if I got stuck. Hate borrowing things often go wrong:) dad is looking through his extras. Thanks so much, slow going but going at least we are having a heat wave of 50/degrees here today!

Working on how to post pics of oil leak.

in the mean time. how often do you have to add oil? when you stop how long until it drips? highdesertranger

Garage sales will only work if you are there early.

Dad, now there is a resource that I did not know about.

Craftsman usually are dependable, and if you watch the sales you can find them 1/2 price.

Kobalt is the new kid with a lifetime warranty.  Also good.

Klein, DeWalt, Dremel,

The more you look at, and handle tools the sooner you can see beyond the shiny plated junk out there.

I still need to get rid of several hundred pounds of tools I no longer use or need.

I bought the truck two months ago, I put 1/3/ of a quart in then it still is in full range. It does not drip on the ground. It looks like oil on outside of many things, fresher on bottom, oil pan?

I will be able to post names of the parts in next couple of days and pics. Can see where pics are super helpful. I took pics and was able to sit inside while it rained and look at it.
Figured out the big font comes.from iPad :)
Thanks for help!

Gotsmart, regarding hundreds of pounds of tools, do u go to rtr, as far as selling some? Thanks so much

Everyone, going to chip away with all your posts and suggestions starting with making sure engine and transmission, then brakes. Then filters. Think

It sounds like the oil leak is basically a non issue.   :D

I was at RTR, but the tools did not gather much interest.  The ones I am selling  are more for commercial plumbers and builders.  Not for the small scale van dwellers.  I need to have a yard sale some weekend.  Homeowners will love them.

Gotsmart, u am going with the non issue also :) thanks again!

If no oil makes it to the ground and you cannot notice the oil level dropping, it is pretty much a non issue.

A high mileage oil might stop it completely, but uinless you wipe the oily engine underside witha rag, you would never know if it was effective.

High mileage oils tend to have more antiwear additives, more detergents/dispersants and seal conditioners. Valvoline Maxlife is one of the better ones. Pennzoil High mileage is a good one too, but nearly as expensive as synthetic at wally world.

Pennzoil yellow bottle, in my opinion, is the best conventional oil.

I've used Pennzoil since day 1.
It is getting pricey these days.
Like everything else I guess.
I remember getting a case (12qts) for 8 bucks.
Of course I was making 3 bucks an hour then.

If you have a lot of oil coating the engine it might be a good idea to de-grease it.
Would make it easier to see where it's leaking from as well as prevent a nasty engine fire...

Gotsmart Those are my beginning tools, so exciting!

Rvpopeye, great when I hear a couple sources say the same thing, just watched a utube videoe today that showed how you can find the leak by degreasing they said u can use brake cleaner also looks like dishwashing detergent. Right on! As soon as it quits raining and snowing here will do. Thanks so much

There is some nonflammable de-greaser at most auto parts places .
Called Pink Stuff or Purple Stuff , lots of variations , they'll know what you mean.

Warm the engine up first.

I used to have a Volvo that used a quart of oil................every time I went somewhere I put a quart in , if it didn't burn up it just leaked out when I shut it off !!!!!!!!!Badoooom tssshhhh

yeah, it's sounds like your mechanic was just trying to make money with the oil issue. still post some pics, but it sounds like a non-issue. highdesertranger

Good to know on the Volvo and will post the pics. Good day to all:)

This multiple personality is confusing.  Reminds me of my last wife.   :s

Caution. Spray solvents such as break cleaner or carburetor cleaner are dangerous to use. Also very bad for health. Do not use for general de-greasing.
Have you checked all the oils? Power steering, and transmission? Tightening rocker cover and pan gasket bolts can help with minor leaks. As others suggest, use a High Millage Oil, the few pennies are worth the cost.
