Flying will save you time and some money, but you will also miss out on a whole lot along the way. Also, many cheap flights have hefty surcharges on luggage. Needing to buy supplies upon arrival and discard them before leaving will also jack up the price. You won't feel at home in a rented RV either. If you drive your own truck, by the time you finish your trip you will begin feeling at home living out of your vehicle.

About being stranded: Don't let the possibility ruin your trip. People have crossed the desert in jalopies that I wouldn't even take across town. Trust your intuition, inspect your car daily. Take it easy, if you arrive a few days after the starting date it is no big deal. It took me three weeks to get from Florida to Quartzsite last winter.

Also, newer vehicles are not immune to breakdowns. My parents have a 2016 Escape with less than ten thousand on the clock that is giving them big problems already.

All true, USExplorer, and i would like to see what that terrain looks like, along the way

As for the TSA all you have to do is act like you're eager for it and enjoying it and they'll make short work of it hahahahah

yeah I know... FL is weird in many ways.

"I can rent RV in FL but can't drive it out of the State of Fl!"

I don't think that applies to all of the rental agencies in the state, but some of them do it here (WA), too, even for cars. When I needed to rent a car here to go to NV, I couldn't get it locally. I had to ask my sister to drive me two hours south to Portland (OR), and rent a car from one of the big agencies near the airport.
