I'm wondering if it might just be a way to get the protectors to disperse and then back to business as usual after a while....................

This is a halt but may be only temporary (few months or a year) while the Army Corps of Engineers holds a formal study and tries to work with the pipeline company for a less environmentally and culturally sensitive route. The pipeline company's original, first choice route went along a predominantly white city (said city shut out that route option so they would not be exposed).

So there should be at least a reprieve during the harshest winter months. The next administration has said he is for the pipeline (and he is an acknowledged INVESTOR in that pipeline consortium). Gunny may need to make a return trip in the spring if they bring back the attack dogs and fire hoses.

For now, it is a victory and I truly believe the presence of the veterans made a differene. Congrats Gunny!

I am a naïve on this subject. but what everyone seems to be saying is this pipe line company was laying this pipe without prior permission? they didn't have all their ducks in a row and have all the permits in hand before starting construction? I am confused, not hard to do. highdesertranger

A project this big requires a huge environmental report.  If done as one project, the paperwork takes many years.  It is cheaper to do it one section at a time in pieces, while the legal fights over the middle pieces is being done.

This is just one of the pieces in the giant puzzle.

Standing rock has generated the most attention on this controversial project.  This link shows the rout, and tells of conflicts along it.

I am trying to word this as neutrally as possible.

We, my friends and I, have decided to leave tomorrow if the promises are kept.

There is a much calmer feeling now. This may be just 'lip service' to calm things down, I don't know.

I'm afraid I wasn't a lot of help physically, offered encouragement and helped with what I could.

Spent two nights in a yurt, if I had land and wanted a decent and cheap living area I would go for one.

I'll send some pictures when I get home

Stay safe and Goodnight, Rob.

Well Gunny, you and your Vet friends have made the difference that was needed to make this a "no go."
I just read on our local TV stations site WBOY-TV.com that the pipeline is to be re-routed!
Congratulations to all of you who took the time, and energy to make a stand for what you believed in!!
You Did It!!!!
Be safe returning home.
Sharon

Glad you made it through, Gunny, and also glad the pipeline was rerouted.

Maybe everyone's efforts have paid off. Even though WFAA in Dallas reports ETP as saying they are confident that the pipeline will be built with out rerouting.
At any rate there is somewhat warmer weather waiting on you and your fellow troops down south, Gunny.

Sorry I missed you, Gunny. I came out to the camp on Saturday with some friends to deliver some supplies and messages but we couldn't stay. We had an Advent Oblate retreat that we were a part of so we had to get back to the monastery in Bismarck. Maybe another time, then. Take care and stay warm.

They want you and the media to go home and relax, then they will quietyly build their pipeline.....

Dave

Dave, you may be right, I am a skeptic too. There were more major news outlets showing up instead of just VOA and Reuters, along with the local types.

I don't advocate violence but I think if the Native Americans feel they were duped again it will not be a peaceful protest. That's just my feeling.

If you get the time look at the shrinkage of their reservation as oil, gold, then oil again were found.

I, a party of one, think we as a nation should honor our word.

I will respect Bob and not be political. I hope it's not a lie and a compromise can be worked out.

Home and warmth tomorrow. Yay.

As always, Be Safe, Rob

Hi Gunny, Job well done. I do think you and the other Veterans truly made the difference and I have nothing but admiration and the utmost respect for what you and your comrades have done. I agree, we as a nation should honor our word and if protesters are again needed come spring time I will try and make a trip out there as well.

I sincerely hope this wasn't just a ploy to get everyone to go home and quiet things down. I have a feeling it's not.

x2 on the yurt. Researched them a few years back and think they'd make an excellent alternative dwelling.

Have an enjoyable and safe trip home.

Was/is the pipeline on native land?

I don't think the USA has honored anything about land.  It is not only native americans.   They can take my land via eminent domain at any time or they can tax me out of it or just say I cannot use it (or camp on it).

I'll third that, we do need to honor our treaties

Sure would be a good thing for all of us, if our Gov. were to honor the treaties!!!

Wonder if it will begin in ND?

I can always hope it does.

It is on land that was given to them in a treaty, then taken from them in another.  It was supposed to cross the main water supply for much of the country.

Earlier in this thread I put a link to maps showing the proposed route.

The other difference is that the Lakota are a soveriegn nation. The federal government should be dealing with this. Not the Morton County Sheriffs Dept;  not the state and certainly not some hired merceneries or sheriffs departments from other counties and statesor money grubbing oil mongers.

There's also such a thing as environmental racisim. And that's a part of this travesty, also.

Is that political? I have a hard time drawing the line here.

The sovereign nation thing has never really made sense to me though.   It is something that just seems to promote resentment and racism.   People who are not part of the nation resent the perceived benefits those others get, while everyone is essentially living in the same area.  Water rights, fishing and hunting rights, access to very cheap or free healthcare.

If you want people to treat each other equally you can't set one group on a pedestal.   The casino thing is a good example here.   Why can't anyone open a casino on their own property if they follow the gaming rules?  I just don't understand any of it.

i tried to stay out of it,i really did

evil pipe lines are everywhere
http://www.pipeline101.com/Where-Are-Pipelines-Located

the check has been cut and in the mail so everyone can calm down and retreat back to the not so sacred land the casino was built on

for being an independent thinker that relies on empirical and physical evidence  and not towing the company line this post will self destruct in 3,2,

Made it home, never thought my tiny apt. Would look so good. And warm.

Gary, if the pipeline is so safe and helps the grass grow as your pictures show why did Bismarck protest it so vocally that it was re-routed thru the reservation upriver of where they get their water? As far as "Sacred Land" and casinoe's ; have you seen the fine land they were given when their original land was 'Approprated'? Cruise thru the Black Hills enjoy the scenery, there is none. They don't claim the casinos are on sacred land, just tribal land, there is actually a difference.

When I decided to go it wasn't a political issue or too much about the pipeline, I am not naive enough to think it won't be built, money cures everything for most people. When attack dogs are set on people who weren't doing anything except blocking access to machinery and as it turns out the security firm hired by the pipeline company was and is not licensed in any state. You may think that's okay, it's your right. I didn't.

If I wasted my time in doing something you don't approve of that's on you. Not me. It was my time, my gas and my business. I'm not sure why you decided to comment at this late date and don't care. I made every effort not to be political.

The LaBrea Tar Pits Vs. this pipeline? Fine example. PM me if you want to discuss it.

It was a learning experience for me, I met some good people, slept in a yurt and learned bits of a new language. Had an interesting conversation with a couple of local cops as we were leaving, I'll pass that on when I am not so tired.

Be Safe, Rob
