Hi folks - I'm in the early stages of converting an E350 passenger van to a 'weekender' camper. Presently working on my bed. I don't plan on making this a real live-aboard like many others here, but this is absolutely the best place I've found for the unique info that just jumps out of these pages. I plan a fixed 30 by 78 inch platform type bed, a moveable chuck box kind of galley, a 'dry' portapot & maybe a solar bag shower.
I do see a deep cycle battery or two mounted along the frame, for my cpap and maybe a TV. I'd done a fair amount of backpacking when my 2 sons were Scouts, and would like to revisit some of those places without having to crawl in the dirt to get into a tent. Although I do have a nice Cabelas tent that has an extension that goes over the rear of a van, I don't plan on using that unless my wife decides to come along. Am still living in a house in central Calif.

Welcome

We use to use a van for camping. I always wanted a tent like that.

Welcome David!

Sounds like a great plan, but I have to ask if that 30" wide bed is going to entice your wife to join you for the trips? LOL :s

That's exactly my wife's feeling. But we went round & round on various designs, & decided to use an air mattress on the floor (for me!) for the few times she is likely to come along. If she really gets involved, it will likely mean a trailer is in our future. Never know. All the years I was backpacking with my boys, she didn't like the tent experience because her head got too cold. I do have a way to add an additional 30" section alongside the bed if that changes, but....this van is not really big enough for that on a full time basis, and it's also kind of my daily driver.
And thanks all for the kind replies.
