I've recently established residency and registered my truck and travel trailer in SD. I'd appreciate recommendations for vehicle insurance for my truck and trailer. I'm not opposed to having separate policies. I just want solid coverage at a fair price.

The insurance agent at my SD mail forwarder set me up with Progressive. I have self-converted van.

I am with Dakota Post of Sioux Falls.  When I had my plates there, I went to the local State Farm place and told them what I was doing.  Ty Teveldal in Sioux Falls was happy to insure me and the price was awesome!  Since then, I moved my plates to FL since I'm in FL almost all the time now, and I got some sticker shock as prices for the same insurance is DOUBLE that of the exact same coverage I had in SD.  I may some day move my residency back to SD, but for now, I'm going to leave it here.  The laws in FL make it almost certain if you spend a great deal of time here that you have to have FL plates.

Yeah I'm looking at SD and Dakota Post, but not for a few more months.

Wasana2 - I hear you about the FL insurance rates, I spend part time there, but retain out of state tags & insurance, it was 2.5 times more than what I currently have. It's because they are one of the top states for uninsured / under-insured drivers. NV is same reason and those are going up as we speak, same rates as FL now.

I've not compared with SD yet.

Land-Pilot, if you can get away with it, I sure would go with SD everything.   Dakota Post also was VERY helpful in helping me.  State Farm in Sioux Falls was great too.  SD people are just really nice folks.

I have been stopped before by LEOs and told them that I was a nomad, didn't matter to them, if you're in this state 30 days they want you to have plates in FL unless you produce an RV park receipt to prove it (note burden of proof is on you).  LUCKILY I had one on me in my glove box that was kinda old, but they still took it.  They aren't so picky about it in snowbird season, but in the summer after seeing me around a lot, they were.   I now spend way more than 6 months in FL anyway, and it's easier to follow the rules.

When you're in FL with your out of state plates, just keep a receipt of an RV, state park, anything in your glove box for at least one night, and as long as it isn't ancient, they'll take it.  To be frank, I actually had no idea it was going to be so expensive to change to FL plates and insurance.  I figured they all charged about the same thing, whoa was I wrong.  I was also too far into changing that I couldn't back out too.  Plus now I can vote, which I couldn't do on the SD nomad residency.  So that's good.  And when I'm not out and about, I call my aunt's house home.  I even have a room in her house, so it's legit...which also is easier.

Yeah, SD is great and try Ty Teveldal at State Farm in Sioux Falls for Insurance.  Good Luck!
