The only thing I know for sure about it is that it's an Onan.
The only thing the previous owner said about it was that it works but the switch won't cut it off - you have to pinch the gas line.

I haven't cranked it up myself as I won't even pretend to know where the gas line is in order to cut it off.

Here are the numbers I found on the label (I'm going to have to rub a pencil over the model number as I can't read it but it's imprinted.)
AC volts 120
Ph1
KVA 2.8
Pf 1.0
Amps 23.3
Hz 60
Rpm 3600
Bat 12
(I'm assuming the last number means the type of battery it will charge?)

There is a lot of documentation on the Onan generators online, you need to find the model number though.

bat 12- is the battery for starting it

It uses a battery to start it? I didn't see another battery back here. Or is it using my house battery to start?

Try this link, it shows some model numbers, maybe it'll help you find yours...

Probably the house battery and they usually had a dash mount switch for remotely turning it on

AC volts 120  (The voltage it will put out)
Ph1               (Single phase)
KVA 2.8         (Power rating)
Pf 1.0             (power factor)
Amps 23.3     (current output)
Hz 60             (output voltage frequency)
Rpm 3600       (engine speed)
Bat 12             (starting battery voltage)
(I'm assuming the last number means the type of battery it will charge?)

I added some descriptions, most of which you don't need to know.

The important thing is it is started with a 12 volt battery , it puts out 120 volts(standard) and it will supply around 23 amps(useful to know!)

3600 rpm is the speed at which the engine in the genset is set to run at.

Correct, and you may notice that 3600 is 60 X 60.  These things are designed to produce 60 cycle ac  (Same as the power lines).  If the RPMs vary too much so will the ac's frequency, which is not a good thing.

dont try starting it until you get it serviced, new oil/filter,air filter, fuel filter? should have one,if it has its own gas tank dump the tank and clean

the shut off problem would be the on/off switch inside or the kill mechanism on the generator

The air filter is new. 1. it looks new 2. The box and receipt were still in the van. The other stuff, I don't know.
I guess I'll need someone to look at it - I just didn't want to spend the $$.

if one of those links are your owners manual you can do it

I didn't provide any direct links to manuals, at this point it is a matter of identifying which model she has.
The only real clue so far is that it is a 2.8kva system, possibly a micro lite series.
Onan has produced so many models over the years that it is important to figure out which one Iterry has.

model # should be written on the unit somewhere

It is a Onan Microlite 2800.  They have made this for quite a few years and is very dependable if exercised regularly (once a month under half load for an hour).  I run the air conditioner in the Summer and an electric 900w heater in the Winter for a load.

The gas line they were pinching is the rubber hose next to the air cleaner.  Pinching the gas line this way will lead to leaks.  It does have a fuel pump so the line is pressurized.  It is not like a lawn mower engine (gravity feed). My cut-off switch works so not much help with getting that working.  Shouldn't be too much to it, may the wire came loose?

The gas tank for it is the vehicle gas tank and has a pickup tube that only goes into the tank 3/4 of the way so you can not run the vehicle out of gas (leaves you a 1/4 tank of gas so you don't strand yourself).

The cover for the air cleaner is missing.  This may not be a big deal if the gen-set is accessible from the inside.  I hope you have the big flat cover that covers the parts shown.  This is for sound deadening a well as protection for the gen-set.

The little red cap is the dipstick and is where you check the oil level and add new oil.  The drain for the oil is near the middle on the underside.  It holds 1 quart of oil.  There is not a filter on mine. The oil should be changed every 50 hours of use.

This will run the air conditioner and the microwave at the same time as long as the air conditioner is started first.  This assumes the PO has not replaced these with new ones that draw more than what came with it originally.  Mine came with a 700w microwave.

And has been stated, manuals are available online.  Just need that model number.

Is the cover for the air filter rounded and black. If so, I have that still - there were many random parts that I didn't know where they went, so I put them in a bag for safe keeping. The metal cover for the generator is there, and the wooden door that goes over it (under the bench) is there.

I have the numbers but I'm not sure what's the model number and what's the...serial number?
But you seemed to know what I have.
Is it loud?
The microwave is the stock one, but the air condition is new, though I think it's still just a 5,000 btu.

The generator is ONLY accessible from the inside. Unless you can get to it from underneath the van. What I mean is there is no door in the body.
