Hi all,
I'm still researching whether to get a dedicated fridge only or a fridge/freezer design (for my van). I figure that having a freezer compartment will only take away from the space that otherwise would be utilized for the fridge.

From your experiences, is having a freezer/fridge combo worth it? How effective is the freezer at keeping stuff frozen (like ice cream or ice cubes) or does it only take up valuable space? Additionally, would having a freezer feature use more electricity than just having a fridge only?

Please recommend some name brands/models, if possible. By the way, I don't want to spend more than $300-$400 tops. Thanks all.

I had the same question as you...

So, I eventually decided on an Engel 40 gt freezer/fridge (pics everywhere on this site). I find that I mainly use the Engel on freeze mode. This, along with a great little ice chest, works out for me.

Basically, if I have anything frozen that I want to thaw out for the day, and have for lunch/dinner that day/night, I pull it out of the freezer and put it in the cooler. Secondly, the ice chest is then able to cool down any drinks, fruit etc... while in the cooler... So, you basically have a freezer AND a fridge, in essence.

I have one of those 12v cooler/warmers, but its kind of limited. I'm going to mount it on the inner side of the side door, which will then double as a small countertop for when the door is open, and also be where I store my cookware. It will be something like these:

I would think a freezer would work better. Freeze water (a couple of quart bottles) in the freezer and move them to a ice chest to keep stuff cool.
I tend to buy my meat in bulk family packs, or when on sale, and then freeze it all. Saves quite a bit of money.. freezer section for the win!
